Female Student Wins MATHCOUNTS® Manhattan 2013

Serina Hu named individual winner at MATHCOUNTS Manhattan 2013, Hunter College High School named best team.

New York, NY, February 06, 2013 --(PR.com)-- 8th grade student Serina Hu from Hunter College High School was named the individual winner at MATHCOUNTS Manhattan 2013. Middle school Mathletes® from Manhattan schools competed in the MATHCOUNTS chapter competition on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at the Baruch Performing Arts Center. The fun and challenging event was part of the national MATHCOUNTS competition sequence.

A total of 28 schools and 254 students competed.

Karen Chen, also from Hunter College High School, took 2nd place. Benjamin Ho from Collegiate School was the 3rd place finisher and Christine Yang from The Brearley School finished 4th.

The top three teams were:

1. Hunter College High School (Karen Chen, Max Everett, Tanya Hao & Serina Hu coached by Sheila Krilov)
2. NEST+m (Thomas Chu, Michael Feinberg, Mike Fu & Eric Zhang coached by Johanna Cinquegrana)
3. Collegiate School (Benjamin Ho, Daniel Lee, David Moon & Clay Papanek coached by Beth Trilling and Paul Schuman)

These three teams will advance to the NY State MATHCOUNTS Competition to be held in Troy, NY in March. Christine Yang from The Brearley School and Steven Litvack-Winkler from The Anderson School were the top two students not on an advancing team and they will advance as individuals.

Clay Papanek won the award for Top 6th Grade Mathlete. The Chapin School won special recognition as the best new school and the team from The Spence School was recognized as most improved.

The top finishers in the fast-paced live Countdown Round were Serina Hu in 1st place, Eric Zhang in 2nd, Karen Chen in 3rd and Chelsea Wang from NYC Lab Middle School in 4th.

“Manhattan schools are home to an incredibly talented group of Mathletes and dedicated mathematics educators. I wish the advancing students much success at the state competition,” said Eve Drucker, MATHCOUNTS Manhattan Coordinator.

Celebrating its 30th year, the 2013 MATHCOUNTS competition sequence will reach approximately 40,000 students, representing more than 5,000 schools from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, U. S. territories and Department of Defense and State Department affiliated schools. The top 4 students from each state competition will receive a free trip to Washington, D.C. for the 2013 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition in May.
