The Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences Hosts Project Suc-SEED

Research Triangle Park, NC, August 01, 2007 --(PR.com)-- Dr. William F. Greenlee, president and CEO of The Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences, an independent, nonprofit organization that offers an open, collaborative and cross-disciplinary approach to strengthen the research investment in biomedical sciences, has announced that it will host the Project Suc-SEED Annual Symposium. Project Suc-SEED is a statewide, year-round science enrichment program, funded by the North Carolina Section of the American Chemical Society, the Burroughs-Wellcome Fund and The Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences. The goal of the program is to financially support and encourage talented North Carolina high school students to pursue graduate and professional school degrees in chemistry or related disciplines through scientific research internship experience. Project Suc-SEED students represent economically disadvantaged and/or underrepresented minority groups. In addition, many students will be the first in their families to attend college.

The program will hold its annual symposium on Thursday, Aug. 2 at The Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences, located at Six Davis Drive in Research Triangle Park. The symposium is the final event for the eight-week summer segment of the program that places students in laboratories at Duke University, North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. At the symposium, students will present results, from their eight weeks of research, to their peers and instructors.

“Project Suc-SEED is critical to the future growth and success of North Carolina as a leader in the science and research industry,” said Greenlee. “By helping deserving students who have a passion for science and research, we are helping ourselves by creating the next generation of innovative researchers and scientific leaders.”

“We are fortunate to have the support of The Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences,” said Kenneth Cutler, program director of Project Suc-SEED. “It is because of them and funding provided by The Burroughs Wellcome Fund that we have been able to develop a program that has led to many of our students pursuing advanced degrees in science and research disciplines.”
