Jim Dodson Speaks to Sarasota Manatee Bike Club About the Startling Number of Florida Uninsured Drivers

Sarasota, FL, March 21, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Jim Dodson met with the Sarasota Manatee Bicycle Club (SMBC) on Wednesday, March 13, 2013 to speak to club members about the need to protect themselves from the millions of Florida drivers on the road who have absolutely no insurance or who are drastically uninsured. Dodson stressed the importance of carrying Uninsured Motorist insurance (UM). UM is critical injury protection cyclists can’t afford to be without.

Dodson, an avid cyclist, safety advocate, and bicycle injury attorney, explained that 25% of drivers in Florida are uninsured. He went on to say that current Florida laws require drivers to have only PIP (personal injury protection) for themselves and insurance to cover only property damages to vehicles. Florida drivers are not obligated to purchase Bodily injury (BI) liability, making the risk of being hit by an uninsured driver greater than in most states.

Dodson said, “This is information you aren’t going to get from your auto insurance agent - when you purchase auto insurance, you have the choice of buying UM coverage or Stacked Uninsured Motorist coverage. Stacked UM coverage increases your coverage and also increases your insurance, but most insurance agents will not quote you for Stacked UM, or even mention it, because insurance companies are price sensitive and know you are price shopping.”

In Florida, drivers purchase BI coverage to protect themselves from lawsuits following an accident they might be responsible for, but you cannot purchase more UM coverage than you purchase BI coverage. BI protects you if you cause an accident and hurt someone. UM protects you, when the other person is at fault, but does not have enough insurance, Dodson explained. “You have to decide how much protection you need. Every person who has walked into my office, said the same thing - ‘It will never happen to me.’ Unfortunately, it happens all of the time.”

As a public service, Dodson distributed complimentary copies of his popular consumer guides, Uninsured Motorist Insurance, Don’t Leave Home without It! and the Florida Bicycle Accident Handbook, along with an opportunity to have a free auto insurance review, telling members, “Take a couple of minutes to fill out this auto insurance review form, and I’ll let each of you know what type of insurance you currently have. Most people simply don’t understand what they have and what they need.”
