Burnsville Orthodontics Office Observes National Facial Protection Month

Dr. Trudy Bonvino of the Lakeville and Burnsville pediatric orthodontics pro explains how treatment decreases chances for facial trauma.

Minneapolis, MN, April 09, 2013 --(PR.com)-- April is National Facial Protection Month and in honor of it, Burnsville pediatric orthodontics specialist Dr. Trudy Bonvino is sharing information on treatment that helps reduce the likelihood of oral trauma.

In a study conducted in 2012 that involved Indian girls ages 11 through 17, children with significant overjet were found to be about three times more likely to suffer dental injuries.

"Orthodontic treatment to correct overjet can go a long way toward preventing injury," said Bonvino, who also is an Invisalign invisible braces provider. "Proper protection of the face and mouth by wearing a protective mouth guard and helmet when required also is imperative.

Correcting overjet is particularly helpful in protecting front teeth. Commonly called overbite, overjet and overbite actually refer to different malocclusions. Overjet describes upper teeth that protrude and create a space between the back of the upper front teeth and front of the lower front teeth. Overbite is how far upper teeth cover lower teeth when the mouth is closed.

While mouth guards are recommended when playing contact sports, orthodontic treatment coupled with mouth guard use is more effective for people who have overjet, Bonvino said.

"Having teeth that protrude farther than they should dramatically increases the likelihood of injury," she said. "We can correct overjet."

Bonvino's office, Cosmopolitan Orthodontics, provides complimentary mouth guard checks to young athletes, and also fits students for custom mouth guards.

National Facial Protection Month is made possible annually through a partnership among the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Association of Orthodontists and the Academy for Sports Dentistry. These organizations work together to promote sports injury prevention.

Parents, teachers and other professionals can assist in spreading the word about National Facial Protection Month with free resources provided on the AAOMS website. Information includes informative posters, handouts, coloring books and fact sheets.
