INK Book Gathering Giving Out Free Books During World Book Night

INK Book Gathering in Idyllwild, CA will help give away nearly 500,000 books as part of an event to promote reading and literacy on World Book Night, April 23rd.

Idyllwild, CA, April 10, 2013 --(PR.com)-- INK Book Gathering in Idyllwild, California announced today that will be participating in the giveaway of nearly 500,000 books during World Book Night on April 23, 2013. INK Book Gathering owner Julie Johnson explained the announcement saying, “We are thrilled to be part of an event that is designed to help promote reading and literacy from coast to coast. There are more than 25,000 volunteers from Berkeley to Boston and Sitka to Sarasota who will be giving away half a million free books in more than 6,000 towns and cities across the US.”

World Book Night U.S. is an ambitious campaign to give thousands of free, specially-printed paperbacks to light or non-readers across America on one day. Volunteer book lovers help promote reading by going out into their communities and sharing free copies of books they love. The mission of World Book Night is to seek out those without the means or access to printed books.

Johnson described how the event will play out in the little village of Idyllwild, high in the San Jacinto Mountains near Palm Springs, CA. “Some of the volunteers in our community will be picking up their books at INK Book Gathering in Idyllwild and sharing them in locations as diverse as VA hospitals, roller skating rinks, mass transit, nursing homes, schools, food pantries, and more. INK Book Gathering is proud to be a partner in World Book Night U.S. for a second year.” This year’s event is being chaired by bestselling authors Ann Patchett and James Patterson.

As an event kick-off, INK will be holding a pre-World Book Night reception on April 19. Local volunteers will enjoy an evening that includes an orientation, meet and greet where they can connect with fellow local book lovers. We have 20 givers signed up in the greater Idyllwild area, distributing the books throughout town from the coffee house to the post office. INK Book Gathering will also be hosting a WBN Post-Reception for both givers and receivers on April 27th at 6 p.m. at the bookstore’s brick-and-mortar location at 54385 North Circle in Idyllwild, CA 92549.

More than thirty titles are being distributed and include classics by authors such as: The Handmaid’s Tale, Margaret Atwood; City of Thieves, David Benioff; Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury; My Antonia, Willa Cather; Girl with a Pearl Earring, Tracy Chevalier; The House on Mango Street, Sandra Cisneros; The Alchemist, Paulo Coelho; Bossypants, Tina Fey; Still Alice, Lisa Genova; The Phantom Tollbooth, Norton Juster; Moneyball, Michael Lewis, just to name a few. There are selections that appeal to all age groups and the complete list can be viewed on INK’s website at www.inkbookgathering.com.

Johnson explained, “The book selections were chosen by an independent panel of booksellers and librarians through several rounds of voting. The printing of the free books was possible due to generosity of the authors, publishers, and book manufacturing companies. Johnson added, “All of the regular edition titles are available for sale at INK Book Gathering, so everyone can have access to these excellent pieces of literature.”
