Wheelchair Manufacturer Replaces Stolen Wheelchair to Maryland Boy with Cerebral Palsy

Convaid Wheelchairs donates a new Safari-Tilt to 18-year-old Matthew, after his disappears from his father's driveway.

Torrance, CA, April 17, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Convaid, Inc., the company that invented the adaptive assisted wheelchair, will provide a free replacement wheelchair to a Maryland family whose son’s Safari-Tilt wheelchair went missing from his father’s driveway last week.

The Torrance-based company first learned about the missing wheelchair through a story in the Havre de Grace Patch asking for help to locate the chair.

“We know how important it is for families with special need children to have a wheelchair on hand to help support their child,” said Convaid President Chris Braun. “It didn’t look like the wheelchair was going to be returned anytime soon and we wanted to make sure Matthew would be able to return to his daily activities without having to wait months while trying to obtain a replacement.”

Matthew, an 18-year-old with cerebral palsy, uses the wheelchair to help him when he is traveling long distances and needs extra support.

The lightweight wheelchair was placed outside his father’s residence in Bay View Estates for an exchange between his parents. A couple hours later the wheelchair was gone.

According to the Havre de Grace Police Department, there was no information or evidence that would suggest that the wheelchair was intentionally taken.

The replacement chair retails for about $4,000 and will be shipped to the family early next week. Like all of Convaid’s wheelchairs, this one will be custom made for Matthew and includes terrain wheels, which are imperative for Matthew to have for his summer camps and long outings.

“I have goose bumps from all of this,” said Matthew’s mother Sandy Schwartz. “I had so many scenarios going through my head when I found out the chair went missing and not once did I think that Convaid would reach out to us to replace Matthew’s chair. What a happy ending.”
