Richard Bland College to Host 2013 Teacher Institutes at Pamplin Historical Park

Highly-acclaimed, week-long courses will help teachers improve Virginia students’ Standards of Learning (SOL) scores.

Richmond, VA, May 23, 2013 --(PR.com)-- This summer, Richard Bland College of William and Mary will offer four enriching programs at Pamplin Historical Park and The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier for teachers seeking recertification. Broken up into two topics, one of the week-long courses will review “Antebellum Slavery, the Civil War, and Reconstruction” on June 17th-21st and July 22nd-26th and the second will examine “Lincoln, Davis, Grant, and Lee: The Last Year of the Civil War,” the week of July 15th-19th and August 5th-9th.

Each institute will be conducted on the Pamplin Park campus and will include guided tours of other historic sites. Participating teachers will earn 3 academic credits from Richard Bland College. Topics to be addressed adhere to Virginia Standards of Learning for History, Government, Geography, Economics, and English.

Dr. Richard Love, Professor of History at Richard Bland College, said “This year marks the 150th anniversary of the battles of Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Vicksburg, events that changed the course of the Civil War. The Teachers Institutes offer educators from around the country a remarkable learning experience centered on one of the most critical events in the history of Virginia and the country. It is really an exciting exploration of ideas, events, and places in one of the most historically significant areas in the country.”

“After retiring in February 2012 from the Supreme Court of Virginia, I participated in the Teachers’ Institute,” said Richard Bland College Professor Ron Neely. “I have been involved in platform training and training management for 37 years; however, this particular class stood head and shoulders above most any other training I have experienced. I loved every minute of the instruction by the Richard Bland College Professors Richard Love and Al Neal.”

The institutes, which total approximately 25 hours of instruction time, offer an opportunity for teachers from across Virginia to exchange instructional ideas. Each institute accommodates 36 teachers. “The institute immerses teachers in historical content on the very grounds where much of the history took place. The institute provides experiential learning at its best, and teachers leave with a lesson plan tied directly to Virginia’s SOLs,” said Tyler Hart, Vice President for Enrollment at Richard Bland College. Interested teachers are encouraged to contact the registrar’s office at registrar@rbc.edu or (804) 862-6206.

Participants may stay overnight in the Richard Bland College residence halls located less than ten minutes from the Park for $240 per week (Sunday-Saturday) and $47 per extra night, payable at the time of registration. Visit http://rbc.edu/residencehalls.php for more information.
