New Book Chronicles 40 Years of Filmmaking in the State of Georgia

More than 100 film industry veterans tell the story of how Georgia became the top movie production state it is today.

Atlanta, GA, June 07, 2013 --( In 1973, then-Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter formed that state’s first film commission. In the forty years since, Georgia has become one of the top five movie-making states in the U.S., rivaling California and New York. A new book, The Industry Yearbook: 40 Years of Georgia Filmmaking & the People Who Made it Happen, now available from Oz Publishing, Inc., tells the story of how the state became known as “The Top Production Hub of the South.”

Tia Powell, owner of Oz Publishing, says, Production in Georgia is booming, and now is the time to document and honor the people and companies that made Georgia a film and television production powerhouse.

The book begins with the filming of Deliverance, the blockbuster 1973 film starring Burt Reynolds, that first got the attention of officials in the state’s Department of Industry and Trade. It then traces the evolution of filmmaking over the next three decades — when award-winning movies such as Driving Miss Daisy, Forrest Gump and Flight were made in Georgia – and culminates with the story of how industry powerhouses like Turner Broadcasting, Inc., Screen Gems, Tyler Perry Studios, and other A-list entertainment companies decided to open motion picture studios in the state.

In interviews with more than 100 gaffers, electricians, producers, directors, actors, caterers, talent agents, and other insiders, The Industry Yearbook paints a vivid, first-person illustration of how Georgia shook off its agricultural, dust bowl stereotype and emerged as a power player in the entertainment industry. Powell, who also publishes The Georgia Film & TV SourceBook, says, "This is the first time Georgia's film and television production history has ever been documented. We are excited to give everyone an opportunity to learn how Georgia's film and television community and infrastructure was built." The historical events and stories came straight from the mouths of those who made it happen.
