SAMO Graffiti Artist Al Diaz to be a Featured Artist in Writing on It All Project on June 16th

New York, NY, June 11, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Al Diaz, co-creator of SAMO© graffiti, and a veteran of the NYC graffiti art scene, will be a featured artist at the Writing on it All Project to be held on Governors Island on June 16th 2013.

“Al creates a surprising amount of messages, anecdotes, warnings, insults, etc. using the characters available from the WET PAINT signs we see throughout the NYC subway system.”

“The signs are ubiquitous, boldly legible, and plentiful just asking to be used. By cutting up the letters, Al came up with a surprising amount of combinations. In 2011, after having developed his signs to a level he was willing to share with others, he began to post them on various subway station walls throughout the city. He has a list of almost a thousand words made with these 9 characters (using multiple signs). Being a veteran of subway spray painting and text oriented graffiti (SAMO) the influences, although not obvious, are very present.”

Al Diaz commented of his "Wet Paint" project, "working with the Wet Paint signs, I get in touch with the reckless creativity of my youth."

Al Diaz is best known as Co-creator of SAMO©. SAMO© was a graffiti tag that Al Diaz and Jean Michel Basquiat collaborated on and signed on the streets of downtown NYC from 1977 to 1980. SAMO© became well known because of its wit and sarcastic humor and has remained well known because of the subsequent fame of artist, Jean Michel Basquiat.
