Yellow Peril Gallery is pleased to present PROXIMITY, a solo exhibition featuring sculpture, performance, photography and installation work by Hao Ni, opening Thursday, August 15, 2013, during Gallery Night Providence.

Proximity is the distance between the physical body and the various systems that create, shape and define it. Through disassembling, connecting, and examining history, memory, and daily occurrences —both trivial and profound, PROXIMITY is part of an ongoing quest by Hao Ni to “uncover that subtle violence hidden in plain sight, as well as a search for that ‘accidental sublimity’ in trivial, fleeting moments of everyday life,” notes Yellow Peril Curator Robert P. Stack.

In this exhibition, Ni created a series of work based on locations such as home, private institutions, and airports. Through examining the ritualistic interaction between people and these places, and making connection to his own understanding of a shifting identity as an immigrant, Ni’s works serve not only as studies on the creation of the contemporary identity, but more specifically, the ambivalence, desperation, and violence during that process.

“When various cycles and systems overlap, tensions will inevitably emerge like mountains from the collision of craters,” Ni explains. “Whether it’s the pressure from time and space compression, or bargaining prices at a thrift store, we never see it or hear it, but we are constantly reminded that we are in the center of the storm.”

The opening reception for PROXIMITY is Thursday, August 15, from 5PM – 9PM during Gallery Night Providence. The exhibition will be on display until Sunday, September 15, 2013. Ni’s work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Chicago, New York and Providence. This is his first solo exhibition at Yellow Peril Gallery.

About Hao Ni

HAO NI is an artist who is currently pursuing an MFA at The Rhode Island School of Design. Originally born and raised in Taiwan, Hao arrived in the United States in 2007 after obtaining his citizenship in Canada. Lost in translation from one culture to the next, Hao’s work is often informed by the dislocation he feels as a Taiwanese Canadian (now American). Hao’s recent work explores the possibility of finding the sublimity from the banal activities of the middle class. Through understanding the system in place in both society, Hao hopes to bring up new questions about the construction of identity in the increasingly globalized world.
