KMW Interiors Outlines Missed Opportunities in Design Projects

Designer, Kita Williams talks about how home owners are missing out on creating pizzazz.

Venice, CA, August 08, 2013 --(PR.com)-- As an interior designer and decorator, Kita Williams have had several projects and catered to the unique tastes and quirks of a variety of clients. Including cats. However, the designer is noticing that more are more clients are filled with fear when it comes to design in their homes. “There are 3 main things that clients tend to shy away from,” notes the designer. “Below, we’ve outlined these 3 missed opportunities. So, take notes and be sure to take advantage of these opportunities when they are presented!”

#1 Overlooking Floor Replacement or Resurfacing

“Many clients get scared when I suggest that the floors be resurfaced or replaced,” admits the designer. According to Kita, it’s natural for people to automatically assume that this will cost a fortune. However, that is not always the case! “There are so many options available that can not only be cost effective, but very beautiful. Laminate flooring is a great cost effective option and, with the current technology, looks so close to real wood you would hardly notice the difference. For homes with worn wood floors, resurfacing is not as expensive as you think. It can usually be done in a day or two and can really update the look of the home. It’s important to note that outdated floors can really lower the perceived value of a space. In the majority of cases, replacing the floors is the most effective way to increase a home’s value.”

#2 Updating the Baseboards
“Again, people seem to ignore or shy away from renovating anything near the floor”, notes the designer. Kita has run across many clients that overlook something that is cheap to replace and makes a big difference, Baseboards. Yep, it’s that strip of would that lines the bottom of the walls where they meet the floor. Kita stresses, “Baseboards are the unsung heroes of renovation. Even if you cannot replace a floor, sometimes updating the baseboards and adding a fresh coat of paint can really turn a space around!” So, next time you’re looking to make your space more appealing, take a look below and see if the baseboards can use replacement or sprucing up.

#3 Using Wall Paper to Accent Walls
“This is the worst crime!” Kita says, shaking her head. “People will often see a wallpaper design in a magazine, movie or a TV show and think, ‘wow that looks cool!’, but when it comes to designing their home, they get cold feet.” Kita admits that there are an endless variety of designs, patterns and colors to choose from. “I think the choices are overwhelming for most people and they just give up and opt for a simple paint job” the designer confessed. But, Kita reveals that there are a number of ways to control the fear! “If you see something you like, save that and try to mimic it with wallpaper styles that are similar, but better suited to your space.”

Also, the designer suggests that if you need more time to figure it out, start collecting wallpaper treatments and styles that you like in an ideabook. “For example, I saw a wallpaper treatment on Gossip Girl and grabbed a pic of the pattern and colors to keep in an ideabook. I did the same thing when I saw a fantastic wallpaper pattern on my favorite BBC show, Sherlock.” According to the designer, the more you collect, the more you’ll see a trend developing in your taste and can later choose a style with confidence. Kita points out, “always remember, we designers are here to help! Working with a designer can narrow down the choices and prevent you from making a terrible mistake.”
