Four-Year Baccalaureate University Hosts Its Fall 2013 Speaker Series Presented by Duke Energy Featuring Native North Carolinians as Guests

Washington and author Adam Shepard, both native North Carolinians, will serve as its fall 2013 speaker series presenters in Kenan Recital Hall. Presented by Duke Energy, Washington and Shepard’s speeches will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 27 and Monday, Sept. 16, respectively. Both events are free and open to the public, but registration is required in advance.

As President and CEO of The Joseph Washington Group in Atlanta, Washington specializes in helping corporate America, nonprofit organizations, colleges and networking marketing groups to deal with changing environments while maintaining a high level of performance. His presentation titled “7 Steps of Breaking the Spirit of Average” will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Aug. 27 and will address the WPU community and friends. Shepard’s novel Scratch Beginnings has been selected as the 2013-2014 summer reading for all incoming first-year students as well as the greater campus community for its alignment with the university’s quality enhancement plan and ethical decision making. His presentation titled “Scratch Beginnings: Me, $25 and the Search for the American Dream,” will be held from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Sept 17. Shepard will discuss with attendees his journey of finding a job, saving $2,500, purchasing a vehicle and furnishing an apartment in just one year.
