William Peace University Opens 2013-2014 Lunch and Learn Series Season with Vincent Melomo, Ph.D.
Associate Professor of Anthropology to Discuss Recent Archeological Research At Fort Caswell on Sept. 18
Raleigh, NC, September 08, 2013 --(PR.com)-- William Peace University, a private four-year university located in downtown Raleigh, has announced that its first 2013-2014 Lunch and Learn Series presentation will feature Vincent Melomo, Ph.D., associate professor of anthropology at the university. Dr. Melomo will present “The Fort Caswell Field School and the Ethics of Archaeology” on Wednesday, Sept. 18 from noon to 1 p.m. in the Main Parlor building on campus. In his presentation, Melomo will explore the goals and findings of William Peace University’s archaeological field school held this summer at the site of Fort Caswell on the North Carolina coast. Specifically, his talks will emphasize how the research ties into the university’s mission and the campus theme of ethical decision-making.
Melomo has co-directed three field schools in the lower Cape Fear for William Peace University, working alongside Tom Beaman, M.A., R.P.A., of Wake Technical Community College. Previous field schools held in 2009 and 2011 researched the Civil War occupation at the N.C. Historic Site of Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson. In the summer of 2013 the field school was held at Fort Caswell, located downriver from Fort Anderson at the mouth of the Cape Fear River. Fort Caswell was initially constructed between 1826-1836 and was used throughout the Civil War and into World War I. The site is currently the property of the North Carolina Baptist Assembly, whose members generously supported the research.
Throughout the academic year, the Lunch and Learn Series will feature both university faculty and visiting faculty, as well as guest researchers, lectures and experts from across multiple majors, topics and industries. Students, faculty, staff, alumni and the greater Raleigh community are welcome to attend. Ticket cost will be $10 for adults and $5 for students and will include a bag lunch for all attendees.
