The Daily Planet Café Announces October 2013 Science Café Events
Rocky Top Hospitality’s Downtown Raleigh Restaurant Hosts Science Talks In Conjunction With North Carolina Museum Of Natural Sciences.
Raleigh, NC, October 02, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Dean Ogan, owner of Rocky Top Hospitality, has announced that The Daily Planet Café, in conjunction with the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, will host five science café events throughout the month of October. The talks are scheduled to take place each Thursday in October as part of the museum’s science programming.
October’s first Science Café event is the next installment of Science Trivia! Held in The Daily Planet Café on the first Thursday of each month, Science Trivia is a fun opportunity to mingle with friends and compete for prizes and bragging rights as individuals battle to answer questions about science facts, current events, pop culture and scientific discoveries. “Plague: Old Disease – New Research” will explore the deadly disease that changed the course of European history. Dr. Bill Goldman, professor and chair of microbiology and immunology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will explain why scientists continue to study the plague and what it can tell us about the evolution and emergence of highly virulent pathogens. Through the discussion, participants will be able to gain a better understanding of how we as a society can learn more about new diseases by understanding old diseases. “Discovery of the Olinguito” will uncover the mysterious creature that has been a victim of mistaken identity for more than 100 years. Participants will hear from scientists who recently completed their study on this remarkable animal, an investigation that took them on a journey from museum cabinets in Chicago to cloud forests in South America. The result found the olinguito to be the first new carnivore species to be discovered in the Western Hemisphere in 35 years. “FBI Safeguards for Science and Technology” will discuss the breakthrough research and development that is taking place on the nation’s campuses and through its research facilities. FBI Special Agent Luis Velasco will look at how U.S. Counterintelligence Strategic Partnerships works to safeguard those technologies which, if compromised, would result in catastrophic losses for the nation’s security. “Bats: Beneficial, Beautiful and Burdened” will explore the often misunderstood and underappreciated world of bats. Extremely diverse, bats are found worldwide, and play important ecological, economic and even medicinal roles. Today though, bats face unprecedented threats to their existence as a result of devastating environmental pressures. Lisa Gatens, research curator for the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, will discuss the fascinating roles of bats on society and their complex, unique diversity.
