Nonviolent Peaceforce (NP) Announces Doris Mariani as Executive Director
Nonviolent Peaceforce (NP) announced the appointment of Doris Mariani as the organization’s new Executive Director. Ms. Mariani will lead Nonviolent Peaceforce into its second decade of providing unarmed civilian peacekeeping in conflict affected areas around the globe.
Ms. Mariani has extensive international leadership experience with governments, non-governmental organizations, civil society and the private sector in the United States, Europe, Asia and Africa. She is a native of Estonia, an economist by training, and has lived half of her life in Europe and half in the United States. Ms. Mariani's previous leadership positions have been in the area of international development and international security. This unique background is extremely valuable to Nonviolent Peaceforce, given the interdependency between peace, security, and development.
Following the fall of the Berlin Wall, Ms. Mariani served as Vice President of the International Executive Service Corps, leading and growing programs that supported the development of local economies and civil society in the newly independent European and Eurasian countries. More recently, she served as a senior executive in the United States Government, where she worked with the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations, civilian agencies, American, European and African militaries, and civil society on civil-military cooperation in Africa. Ms. Mariani's experience operating in complex situations will be invaluable to Nonviolent Peaceforce as they continue to champion unarmed civilian peacekeeping in response to conflict.
