)-- Ordering a movie on demand may be a simple task for the end user, but until today there was extensive backend development that had to be accomplished to make Video on Demand (VoD) a possibility. NetRange, the global leader in white label Smart TV portal solutions, announced today it has developed the NetRange VoD API to eliminate the complications, costs and time previously required to launch new VoD services.
VoD services developed without the NetRange VoD API that provide DRM protected content require access to device information, and the media player on the devices needs to communicate with the VoD service to decrypt content. As VoD Services are cloud-based, communication lines have to be established via custom browser-plugins. After the assessment and technical integration of the plugins on the device, the integration has to be tested, the development has to be translated in a new software release, the software has to be published and installed by the end-user, and then finally, access to the VoD service on the device in the customer’s home can be granted. This often resulted in several months of delay between starting the integration and the first movie purchase.
Now, with the release of the NetRange VOD API communication between the VoD service and the device and vice versa are standardized. This eliminates months of custom infrastructure work, and VoD services can now be added to a Smart TV portal without any additional effort. Development costs and time to market are drastically reduced. With the one-time integration of the NetRange API, multiple VoD services can be added instantly to Smart TV platforms around the world in a matter of hours instead of months.
