Getting the Most Out of Exhibitions

The Irish Academy of Public Relations has just uploaded a free-to-view video about Exhibitions. The video explains why companies exhibit and what they should do to get the maximum benefit from their participation. Sponsorship is taught online by the Irish Academy as part of its Certificate in Public Relations and Diploma in Event Management courses.

“Exhibitions provide a great opportunity to meet with potential customers one on one,” said Ellen Gunning, the Academy’s director. “Everyone knows that communications and sales are most effective when done face-to-face. There are not that many opportunities for corporates to do that in the average year. It fascinates me that some simply mis-manage the opportunity and fail to get the greatest possible return from their investment,” she added.

Corporates participate in exhibitions for primarily one of two reasons. Some participate in order to prime the market and create a presence. This category would include universities and third level institutions who will meet students several years before they make their college choice. Other corporates, like tour companies and airlines, will exhibit at travel fairs in order to sell.

The Academy’s exhibition video is full of simple and effective suggestions. Here are just three:
1. A lot of time, effort, energy and money goes into a company’s participation in an exhibition which usually has an appointed Exhibition PR. Companies should give information to this person and get publicity value from this free resource.
2. There are usually special press days in advance of an opening. Many companies fail to put up their stands on time, or to produce press packs for these events.
3. The organisers have arranged a guest of honour to open the event. Companies should be involved early, issuing invitations to the guest through the exhibition pr.

The Exhibition video is the seventh in a series of nine educational videos which the Academy is uploading. Exhibition skills are taught as part of the Academy’s Certificate in Public Relations and Diploma in Event Management courses. Both courses are taught, online, worldwide.
