RTI Unleashes the Power of Complex Event Processing to Speed Deployment of Low-Latency, High-Throughput Applications

Coral8 CEP Engine now integrated with RTI’s real-time messaging, caching and data-visualization solution

Santa Clara, CA, September 21, 2007 --(PR.com)-- RTI, The Real-Time Middleware Experts, announced today that it has integrated Coral8’s Complex Event Processing (CEP) engine with RTI’s high-performance messaging, caching and data-visualization infrastructure for real-time applications. With this combined solution, developers can now rapidly create and deploy distributed applications capable of processing millions of messages, data updates and events per second, with latencies less than a millisecond. This performance is one to three orders of magnitude higher than is possible with traditional distributed CEP deployments.

“Coral8 is pleased to be working with RTI, an established leader in high-performance middleware,” said Terry Cunningham, CEO of Coral8. “As our customers scale their applications, they find that the limiting factor is not the CEP engine, but the ability of the underlying communications infrastructure to deliver data to the engine. With its high-performance messaging and caching technology, RTI eliminates that bottleneck and allows CEP applications to take advantage of significantly higher data volumes.”

CEP applications analyze streaming data in real time in order to quickly identify meaningful and actionable information. Examples include the analysis of financial market data for algorithmic trading and the fusion of data from multiple sensors, such as radars, for improved accuracy and situational awareness.

CEP applications are typically deployed in distributed computing environments, such as clusters or grids. Consequently, the amount of data that a given application can synthesize is constrained by the ability of the messaging software used to deliver it. Most messaging technologies are only able to distribute hundreds to thousands of messages per second. This limits the quality of the intelligence that a CEP application is able to derive. These slower distribution speeds might also force developers to decompose applications into smaller and more distributed components that serially analyze subsets of the data, increasing latency and cost-of-ownership.

RTI’s high-performance data distribution capability unleashes the power of CEP. RTI allows individual applications to receive and send between tens of thousands and millions of messages per second, a rate one to three orders of magnitude higher than is possible with other distribution technologies. RTI also eliminates the need for message brokers—a choke point in most systems. Aggregate, system-wide throughput is limited only by the switching fabric. This performance gives users a competitive information advantage while simplifying system architecture.

In addition to allowing much more data to be processed, RTI provides much lower latency. Over Gigabit Ethernet, RTI’s latency is as low as 65 microseconds per network hop versus several hundred microseconds with most other messaging products. Given that data and events in CEP applications typically make multiple network hops, RTI can provide a competitive speed advantage of several milliseconds.

“The high performance and scalability of the Coral8 Engine make it a natural complement to RTI’s real-time data distribution technology,” commented Stan Schneider, CEO of RTI. “The performance of a real-time application is impacted by all of the software and hardware in the critical data path. Just as a chain is no stronger than its weakest link, an application can perform no better than its slowest component. By coupling our industry-leading technologies, RTI and Coral8 remove bottlenecks and help developers and OEMs build scalable systems with maximum throughput and minimal latency from end to end.”

About RTI’s CEP Solution
RTI’s CEP solution includes the Coral8 Engine and input and output adapters that integrate it with RTI’s high-performance messaging and caching infrastructure. Using RTI’s dashboard builder, developers can also easily create and deploy graphical interfaces that display CEP results in real time.

In addition to RTI’s own middleware, CEP adapters are included for other popular data-distribution interfaces and databases, including messaging products, XML streams and SOAP. Support for a wide variety of adapters allows CEP applications to be developed that synthesize data from disparate sources and flexibly distribute results to a wide variety of destinations.

Because of its broad adapter support, RTI’s CEP solution is well suited to integrating high-performance real-time applications with slower enterprise applications. CEP applications can be easily developed to filter, aggregate and transform high-throughput data so that business-relevant information and events are delivered at a rate and in a format that enterprise applications can assimilate.
