PIH Health Named One of America's 100 Best Hospitals by Healthgrades

PIH Health Among Top 2% of Hospitals in Nation, and One of Eight in the Los Angeles Area.

Whittier, CA, February 27, 2014 --(PR.com)-- PIH Health has been named as a recipient of Healthgrades 2014 America’s 100 Best Hospitals Award thus placing the organization’s PIH Health Hospital - Whittier campus as one of 15 hospitals in California to receive the honor. Healthgrades, an online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals, noted that to be recognized with this distinction, hospitals must have had risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates that were in the top 2% in the nation for a minimum of four years.

“We are honored to be one of just eight hospitals in the Los Angeles area to receive the America’s 100 Best Hospitals Award,” said PIH Health President and Chief Executive Officer James West. “Our vision is to put our patients first in all that we do, and this award further supports our commitment to quality care for our communities.

From 2010 to 2012, Healthgrades America’s 100 Best™ hospitals, as a group, had an overall 24.53% lower risk-adjusted mortality rate across 19 procedures and conditions where in-hospital mortality was the clinical outcome, compared to all other hospitals in the nation. From 2010 to 2012, if all other hospitals had performed at the level of Healthgrades America’s 100 Best™ hospitals, 160,701 lives could have potentially been saved nationwide.

In addition to the overall award in clinical excellence, PIH Health Hospital - Whittier was specifically recognized as one of Healthgrades America’s Best 100 Hospitals for Gastrointestinal Care™ (three years in a row; 2012-2014) and in Critical Care (two consecutive years; 2013-2014).

PIH Health has been a leader in critical care since the 1960s, and just last year opened its new 48-bed Critical Care Center in the brand new, state-of-the-art Plaza Tower.

“We constantly strive to provide innovative, quality and compassionate care – everything we do is with the patient in mind,” said PIH Health Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer Rosalio J. Lopez MD MBA. “This award reflects PIH Health’s commitment to advancing critical care.”

“This distinction provides consumers in Los Angeles, CA area with a measure of confidence that the hospital has delivered better than expected outcomes across a broad spectrum of conditions and procedures and over an extended period of time,” said Evan Marks, EVP Informatics and Strategy, Healthgrades. “The Healthgrades America’s 100 Best™ hospitals have exhibited exceptional performance, reflecting a long-standing approach to quality care.”

Last month PIH Health was recognized with 2014 Healthgrades Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence™ marking the fourth consecutive year for the honor. That annual award highlights the top 5% of the more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide for its clinical performance. Additionally, in 2013 for overall clinical excellence, Healthgrades recognized PIH Health with the Outstanding Patient Experience Award and among the Top 10% in the nation for Outstanding Patient Experience.

Healthgrades America’s 100 Best™ hospitals award recognizes hospitals for consistent clinical excellence by identifying those that received a Healthgrades Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence™ for the most consecutive years. To be eligible for the Healthgrades Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence, a hospital had to have been evaluated for its performance in at least 21 of the 30 Healthgrades procedures and conditions, based on Medicare inpatient data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) database.
