Gay Persecuted War Hero Alan Turing Commemorated in Upcoming DVD Release “Codebreaker”

Documentary about Alan Turing, computer science pioneer and breaker of the German Enigma code, available on DVD 3/11.

Warren, NJ, March 06, 2014 --(PR.com)-- Passion River Films is proud to announce the upcoming DVD release of the documentary “Codebreaker: The Story of Alan Turing.”

Born in 1912, British mathematician and logician Alan Turing is considered one of the principal figures in the development of computer science. His theoretical “Turing machine” served as one of the first models for how a computer could operate. During World War II Turing proved to be an invaluable asset to the Allied Forces by breaking the Enigma code used by Nazi Germany.

While computer scientists view Turing as one of the most influential theorists of computation and artificial intelligence, the general public is largely unaware of Turing’s contributions to the war effort. Alan Turing was never elevated to the status of national hero because of his homosexuality, for which he was arrested and convicted in 1952. He was forced to undergo chemical castration, and committed suicide shortly thereafter.

“Codebreaker” is filmmaker Clare Beavan’s attempt to rehabilitate the legacy of this war hero. Originally produced for British television, the film intercuts documentary scenes with dramatic re-enactments. Through this unique approach, “Codebreaker” provides a complex portrait of one of the most important individuals of the twentieth century.

Since the film’s initial debut in 2011, Alan Turing has gained more widespread recognition. In 2013, Queen Elizabeth II granted Turing a posthumous pardon, one of only three royal pardons to have been granted since 1945. Later this year, the Weinstein Company will be presenting the Hollywood adaptation of Turing’s life, “The Imitation Game,” which is currently in post-production and stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Turing. “Codebreaker” serves as a perfect introduction to this previously underrepresented story.

“Codebreaker: The Story of Alan Turing” will be available on March 11, 2014 on DVD through Passion River Films on Amazon and all major retailers.
