JP Dance Group presents their first New York City Spring Performance Season at the Riverside Theatre , May 9th and May 10th 2014.

These two nights of cutting-edge contemporary dance drama features the premiere of 99 a new work choreographed by Artistic Director Julie Petrusak as well as special guest performances by Germaul Barnes/Viewsic Expressions Dance and ACB Dance Company. Other works on the program include Ma Memoire Invisible by JPDG dancer Cherri Nelle Thompson, Widow, a haunting excerpt from Julie Petrusak’s 2012 piece Apparitions, and Fortitude of She, Petrusak’s tribute to her female ancestors who immigrated to United States through Ellis Island, which premiered during Riverbank State Park’s Young People’s Performance Series in 2012.

In Petrusak’s new work, 99, JP Dance Group dissects the trials and tribulations of the average nine to five worker. Featuring original music by Aaron Immanuel Wright, 99 redefines the label of the “99 percent” The work declares that being in the 99 percent does not just refer to the financial situation of the majority. It refers to the feeling of being one of 99 people applying for the same position, the feeling of being almost the best, but missing the mark by one percent, yet still having 99 reasons to be thankful and to love life as it is.

Guest artists Germaul Barnes/Viewsic Expressions Dance will perform his solo Ready, which takes a witty look at how a person must get Ready for love. A winner of a Bessie Award and a former principal dancer with Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company, Germaul Barnes formed his own company Viewsic Expressions Dance in 1991. Mr. Barnes mission is to promote and present multilayered dance performances and educational residencies.

Guest Artist ACB Dance Company will present its 2012 duet Tintinnabuli. Led by Alison Cook Beatty, ACB Dance Company is a classically based modern dance company exploring the universal human condition through expansive and emotionally driven movement grounded in American modern dance.

About JP Dance Group
JP Dance Group is a contemporary dance company that is dedicated to entertaining, educating, and inspiring its audiences through dance. JPDG believes that dance is the ideal format for storytelling and strive to deliver powerful dance narratives that resonate with people of all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life. Founded in 2012 by Choreographer and Artistic Director, Julie Petrusak, JP Dance Group provides educational programming for school -aged children, outreach for the community, as well as performances and events for the general public. The company strives to use dance to connect with its audience in a unique way and share stories through movement because dance moves everyone.

When a new production is created, Petrusak begins with a real-life experience as her inspiration. As Petrusak choreographs, she chooses specific images, emotions, and sensations from that experience and exaggerates them with her movement, gestures, or other visuals such as costuming and lights. The resulting product is a slightly abstracted, surreal version of the original narrative. Petrusak’s goal is to tell a story, but to present it in a way that the audience has freedom to interpret for themselves what they are seeing on stage and what is significant. JP Dance Group is attentive to every detail of its productions and is committed to providing high-quality productions for young people, senior citizens, and the community at large. Each performance by JPDG is a one-of-a-kind experience that we hope will resonate in the hearts and minds of all whom is watching.
