Wake Radiology Extends Partnership with Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure

Raleigh, NC, June 07, 2014 --(PR.com)-- Wake Radiology, the Triangle’s leading medical imaging provider, has extended its partnership with the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. This marks the eighth consecutive year that Wake Radiology has been a sponsor of the Susan G. Komen North Carolina Triangle to the Coast affiliate.

“Wake Radiology shares Susan G. Komen’s goal of ending breast cancer and we’re proud to support the important work they do in our community to provide education and screenings,” said Dr. Danielle Wellman, Wake Radiology’s co-director of breast imaging services. “It’s important for women to understand the value of early diagnosis and treatment. Getting of annual mammograms and performing monthly self exams can help detect breast cancer early, when chances of survival are highest.”

Wake Radiology uses advanced screening tools to help women across the Triangle detect breast cancer. It recently invested in a powerful new technology – 3D mammography – that represents one of the most significant advancements in breast cancer screening in the past 20 years. The use of 3D mammography provides more accurate imaging that can improve breast cancer detection rates by up to 50%.

Through its partnership, Wake Radiology will support Susan G. Komen’s educational and outreach efforts at the organization’s flagship event – the 18th annual Triangle Race for the Cure – will be held on Saturday, June 14 at Meredith College. Wake Radiology will have a tent available at the race for women to make a mammogram appointment and learn about the importance of conducting monthly self exams. Wake Radiology will also serve as the official transportation sponsor for the event and enter a team of employees and family members to participate in the race.

The 2013 Race for the Cure raised more than $1.1 million to provide education, screenings and treatment for uninsured or underinsured women and support national research initiatives. Participants can register online at www.komenNCTC.org.

“We all know that early detection saves lives and our community is so lucky to have Wake Radiology as a vital resource. Their support of our Triangle Race for the Cure helps provide mammograms and education to hundreds of women in our 29 counties,” said Pam Kohl, executive director of the Susan G. Komen North Carolina Triangle to the Coast affiliate.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women. About 1 in 8 (12%) women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime. Breast cancer is responsible for the death of about 40,000 women each year.

Wake Radiology is the first outpatient imaging provider in the Triangle to earn designation as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology.
