Redskins’ Brandon Lloyd to Share Passion for Writing with D.C. Area Children

Herndon, VA, October 17, 2007 --(PR.com)-- On October 23, 2007, Washington Redskins’ Wide Receiver, Brandon Lloyd will be spearheading a new project to share his passion for writing with second graders at McNair Elementary School in Herndon, Virginia.

The project originated from Lloyd’s own love of journaling as a way to chronicle his life for his own children. Over the past two years, Lloyd has shared his personal journal with NFL fans, allowing Redskins.com to publish his entries for an inside look at Redskins Training Camp. Through this upcoming initiative, Lloyd will be visiting with school children, encouraging them to begin this rewarding pastime as a way to immortalize their own lives while honing their writing skills.

“Over the years, journaling has not only been a great way to document my life, but it’s also helped me to refine my writing abilities,” said Lloyd. “Writing is a skill that just can’t be underestimated—whether for communication or as a catharsis, and I really want to encourage kids to start early.”

For the eager second graders, it will not only be a chance to spend a day with an NFL player, but Lloyd’s “lesson plan” also fits nicely within the school’s second grade curriculum.

“One of the genres of writing we do in our class is journal writing,” said Debbie Wines, a second grade teacher at McNair, “I read Brandon’s journal entries on the web and I was so impressed that I felt he would be the perfect person to stress to my students the importance of writing in their everyday lives. I told my students last week that Brandon is coming to visit us and they could hardly contain themselves. They can't believe a Redskins player is coming to our school. This is going to be a very exciting day.”

With the help of Staples, Inc., Lloyd will be distributing school supplies to the children as well. Through a generous donation, Staples is seeing to it that each child gets his or her very own journal along with other essential supplies to ensure they reach their full academic potential.

“Lloyd’s project with McNair Elementary will allow students to experience the joy of writing with a national role model,” said Joy Errico, spokeswoman for Staples Community Relations. “Staples is honored to support this innovative writing program that will make a positive impact on the lives of elementary students from economically-disadvantaged households throughout the D.C. area.”
