Giopato & Coombes Helicopter Interior Design for AgustaWestland

Giopato & Coombes has designed a groundbreaking helicopter interior for AgustaWestland which could take VIP helicopter flight to a new level. The design duo have orchestrated an immersive, multi-interactive and multi-sensorial experience by designing everything from champagne coolers, carbon fibre armchairs, cloudcontrol servers and led composite materials.

Treviso, Italy, June 27, 2014 --(PR.com)-- Giopato & Coombes, selected by Giulio Cappellini have taken part in the workshop Flydeas for AgustaWestland to design the interior of the new AW169. Following the success of the exhibition held in Milan, Italy during the furniture fair, Giopato & Coombes present a virtual tour of their project via their website and social channels.

Their interior concept breaks the boundaries of the standard VIP helicopter flight experience. The concept “A Statified World” sees different aspects of design layered on top of one another, from interior architecture to the adaptation of home appliances such as LG’s curved led TV technology to create an immersive total flying experience. Their wide-reaching research saw the application of proxemics, noise-absorbing paint, the construction of full-scale ergonomic mock-ups, carbon fibre armchairs inspired by the Ducati Monster, custom designed headphones and important innovations such as the use of airbags to protect luggage in the hold.

The design began with the reorganization of architectural shadow lines and windows as an effort to clean away unnecessary visual confusion, closely following by an integrated wall composite that combines led lighting, noise-reducing nano-materials and fibreglass beta-cloth. The seating layout respects proxemic distances whilst encouraging multiple concurrent interactions such as the exterior landscape, other passengers, and the helicopter itself via the central infotainment hub more commonly seen in stock exchanges. Giopato & Coombes’s design journey continued into the detailing of air-conditioning vents, a champagne cooler, copper seatbelts and titanium reading lights.

Giopato & Coombes are inspired by all aspects of creative thinking from art to architecture, and this project is no exception, with important references to works by James Turrell, Cristina Dìaz Moreno, Alvarò Siza, Carine Roitfeld and Valentino. They act as a bridge between territorial excellence and global markets, between intuition and reason, between tradition and innovation and between the freedom of expression and the constraints of industry. Giopato & Coombes work across a wide range of disciplines from home appliances, chairs, interior showrooms, renewable energy hubs and private residences in Europe, Asia and Africa.
