Is It a Photograph or a Painting?

Little stories to tell – a coffee table book that features over 80 storybook portraits from V.Van Tiem using a new fusion of mediums: traditional photography, graphic design and digital painting. But is it art?

Carmel, IN, October 25, 2007 --(PR.com)-- Thumbing through the pages you may find yourself asking, "Is this a photograph or a painting?" The answer is yes. “I’m utilizing all my experience with natural media, digital media, design and photography, and combining them.” Victoria explains. “ I start with a photograph taken in the studio I designed for natural and real portraits-this becomes the foundation. Skin tones are digitally airbrushed, and I digitally paint in, with oils or watercolors, all the little embellishments that add to the story telling. So, is it a photograph or a painting? Well, yes. The answer is yes.”

David hockney brought to the forefront what has now been coined the “hockney theory”; hockney contends that the great master painters had a secret-they used an optic lens to project the image onto their canvas. This gave unbelievable, almost photographic details that were otherwise impossible. “They used the technology of their day to create a new form of art.” Victoria adds, “I guess that’s where I am, somewhere new and in-between. But art nonetheless.”
