Boyd's Bears Closes Their Doors Forever

Did you hear that Boyd's Bears will close its doors forever effective December 31, 2014?

Austin, TX, August 18, 2014 --(PR.com)-- Beacon's Glow Collectibles, an online gift and collectibles retail store specializing in dolls, teddy bears, and collectible figurines (http://www.beaconsglow.com/), is saddened to announce that Boyd's Bears is going out of business effective December 31, 2014.

Retailers were not notified of the closing but rather found out through their Boyds Friends of Boyds (FOB) collectors who were emailed the news. Already considered a definite shortcoming by many retailers, Enesco, distributor of Boyds, definitely handled this announcement very poorly.

Enesco took over Boyd's back in 2008 when Boyd's was struggling miserably to stay afloat. Many collectors stopped collecting Boyd's Bears at this point as they said that the quality was not as good and these collectible bears just did not have the appeal that they once did. But yet other collectors thought they were just as well produced as before. Beacon's Glow Collectibles can attest to the fact that there still remained many loyal Boyd's customers.

Enesco has blamed the "rising cost of manufacturing and materials, as well as the intensive labor required" as the reasons to eliminate this brand. In looking at Corporate America, this might be true but the bottom line is most probably the steady decline in sales since 2008.

Boyd's was founded by the flamboyant G.M. Lowenthal in 1984. This company was wildly popular throughout the 80's and 90's. Collectors made it a point to watch him on the shopping channel, QVC, and many bears and figurines won numerous awards during this timeframe. Loyal collectors amassed enormous amounts of Boyd's Bears and figurines during this period as well.

Beacon's Glow Collectibles has carried Boyd's Bears since 2004 and will sorely miss this company. Perhaps the loss of Boyds will prompt collectors to both strengthen and increase brand awareness of Bearington Bears, Boyd's intense competitor for many years? Time will tell...
