Third Consecutive Participant of the First Tee of the Triangle Selected to Play in 2014 Nature Valley First Tee Open

Local Student Jonathan Paulson Chosen to Represent Triangle Chapter at National Golf Tournament in Pebble Beach, California

Raleigh, NC, September 10, 2014 --(PR.com)-- The First Tee of the Triangle, a nonprofit organization dedicated to impacting the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf, has announced that Jonathan Paulson was selected to represent the chapter in the upcoming 2014 Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach in California. He is The First Tee of the Triangle’s third representative chosen consecutively to compete, following Amanda Levy in 2013 and Kaleb Lester in 2012. An official Champions Tour event, the tournament will be held Friday, Sept. 26 through Sunday, Sept. 28 and will be televised live internationally on the Golf Channel.

Paulson will join 80 other participants from The First Tee chapters across the country for the 54-hole event, which is in its 11th year. The 18-year-old home-schooled student has been a member of The First Tee of the Triangle since he was 10 years old, and he has enjoyed meeting and playing with other young golfers through participation in The First Tee programs, such as The First Tee Life Skills and Leadership Academy he attended this July in San Diego, California. While at the Academy, Jonathan played championship golf, participated in life skills activities and career exploration, experienced dorm living and met a wide variety of young people from around the world. The overall purpose of the Academy is to provide participants with valuable character education and leadership instruction.

As part of the selection process, Paulson wrote essays demonstrating his comprehension of the life skills and character education learned through his involvement with The First Tee. In addition, a national panel of judges evaluated his playing ability to ensure he could keep up with the rigors of the course. Paulson was selected from more than 150 applications submitted nationally.

All tournament participants will be paired with one of 81 Champions Tour players and 162 amateurs as they compete for the pro-junior title at Pebble Beach Golf Links and Poppy Hills Golf Course. Play will be conducted on both of these courses on Friday and Saturday, and the final round will be played on Pebble Beach on Sunday. Champions Tour players in the tournament include 2012 and 2013 Nature Valley First Tee Open winner Kirk Triplett, Charles Schwab Cup contenders Jay Haas and Kenny Perry, and a number of World Golf Hall of Fame members.
