An Inside Look at BLU Jazz+, Akron’s New Live Jazz Venue & Historic Photography Gallery

BLU Jazz+, a stunning new live music venue & photography gallery opens its doors on October 24th in downtown Akron, Ohio.

Akron, OH, October 15, 2014 --(PR.com)-- A new jazz club opens its doors on October 24th in the heart of the Historic Arts District of Downtown Akron. BLU Jazz+, situated on the lower level of the historic Hermes Building at Market & Main, brings music back to a building which once served as Akron’s opera house and Academy of Music in the late 1800’s.

The lounge-like throwback concept centers on the presentation of live jazz performances by local, national, and international jazz acts. BLU Jazz+ offers a relaxing environment with a mid-century modern décor, a “Black & BLU” inspired menu of small plates & tapas, and a full-service bar boasting premium liquors, signature cocktails, and inspired wine & beer selections.

“BLU Jazz+ fulfills a unique niche in downtown Akron,” said, Mike Wyatt (VP, Talent & Events, BLU Jazz+). “Akron and its surrounding areas have had an abundance of jazz talent for quite awhile now. The combination of seasoned jazz masters, talented up-and-comers, and an eager audience can all converge upon our inviting space in celebration of the performance and preservation of this treasured art form,” Wyatt added.

The arrival of BLU Jazz+ to the Historic Arts District brings a stylish, sophisticated place for people to come listen to incredible jazz music & have a good time.

"We are making a joyful noise for people right here in downtown Akron," said Tony Troppe, Creative Director, Proprietor, BLU Jazz+.

Built in the 1870’s and made of local sandstone & brick, BLU Jazz+ has been completely restored to its former glory and boasts a cozy, inviting space complete with upscale fixtures & finishes. The décor of the space is lined with a collection of black & white photographs taken in the early 1950’s by Frank Kuchirchuk, courtesy of an exhibit license arrangement between Oberlin Conservatory & BLU Jazz+. This rare collection of jazz greats (many of which have never been seen by the public) includes subjects such as Charlie Parker, Dizzie Gillespie, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Louis Armstrong and more as they made their way through Northeast Ohio while on tour.

"The caliber of musicians coming to the Akron area to play at BLU Jazz+ is really exciting,” Wyatt said. “We are proud to introduce Akron-native trumpeter, Josh Rzepka & his quintet, to kick off our Inaugural Season on October 24. In the coming weeks, we will be hosting some other really exceptional talent including Ken Peplowski, Theron Brown, Ernie Krivda, Dan Wilson, Jack Schantz, Helen Welch, Barbara Rosene and more!”

Tickets are general admission (typically ranging from $8-$20) which can be purchased at the door, but patrons are encouraged to buy tickets online in advance at blujazzakron.com to guarantee admission.
