FreemanWhite Receives Citation of Merit Award from Healthcare Design Magazine

Raleigh, NC, November 01, 2007 --(PR.com)-- Ned Jennings, principal at FreemanWhite, an architectural, engineering, interior design and consulting services firm for healthcare organizations in the United States, has announced that the firm has received the Citation of Merit Award from Healthcare Design magazine for Pitt County Memorial Hospital’s Pediatric Palliative Care Unit in Greenville, N.C. From the 196 healthcare projects submitted for the magazine’s Architectural issue, FreemanWhite’s work was one of the 5 percent that received the Citation of Merit.

Pitt County Memorial Hospital is a regional resource to over 1.3 million people across 29 counties. With FreemanWhite’s creation of the 1,265-square-foot Pediatric Palliative Care Unit, the medical center’s 122-bed Children’s Hospital now has a full complement of pediatric care. Children in palliative care are terminally ill. As such, palliative care programs address the needs of the whole child, with an additional emphasis on delivering specialized care with dignity, privacy and respect. In this palliative care design, the positive distractions and accompanying details involved every human sense from ceiling lights and a custom-designed fish tank to the sounds of running water and a real garden outside, where the child’s bed can be rolled outside for fresh air, warm sunshine, and a visit with a family pet.

“We are honored to receive the Citation of Merit Award from Healthcare Design magazine for Pitt County Memorial Hospital’s Pediatric Palliative Care Unit,” said Jennings. “This design was especially meaningful since the life of each child in palliative care is limited, thus ever more precious. We took special care to place the child as the design centerpiece to make them as comfortable as possible during their stay in the unit.”
