GFAS Ready to Support Citywide Bans on Carriage Horses

GFAS, an international sanctuary and rescue center accreditation body, has offered to support finding sanctuary for any retired carriage horses as part of any citywide ban in the U.S.

Washington, DC, November 28, 2014 --(PR.com)-- The Salt Lake City Council unanimously voted to ban horse-drawn carriages in the city with exceptions for parades and certain free-expression activities. There was strong public support for the ban, considered by some to be redemption for the death of Jerry, a carriage horse that collapsed on a busy Salt Lake City street in 2013.

“There is accumulating evidence that there are safety concerns for the horses, pedestrians, and motorists with horse-drawn carriages sharing the streets,” points out Kellie Heckman, Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) executive director. “There have been at least 25 documented accidents in the past five years in New York City alone.”

GFAS, an international sanctuary and rescue center accreditation body, has offered to support finding sanctuary for any retired carriage horses as part of any citywide ban in the country. “The welfare of the horses that provide this service needs to be the priority, and we need to keep them out of harms way,” states Heckman.

GFAS has certified 104 equine sanctuaries and rescue groups. Many have said that they would support the rescue of carriage horses. “There is a strong equine rescue community that is ready to step up in order keep these animals safe,” states Daryl Tropea, GFAS Senior Deputy Director.

Similar bans are being argued for in other major municipalities. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio embraced the ban on horse-drawn carriages as a primary platform during the last election describing the conditions of the horses in Central Park at the time as “inhumane.” Chicago alderman Edward Burke introduced a measure that would ban horse-drawn carriages earlier this year.
