Plumbing the Depths of Colossal Clogs in the Nightmare After Thanksgiving

Hub Plumbing and Mechanical’s CEO John Wood provides a plumbers eye view of the aftermath of the Thanksgiving feast and offers suggestions on how to keep your plumber from becoming an unwanted Thanksgiving guest.

South Boston, MA, November 09, 2007 --(PR.com)-- With Halloween come and gone you’d think the scariest holiday of the year was past - which would normally be true - but not if you’re a plumber…

In an annual ritual that strikes fear in the heart of the most stalwart, plumber’s telephone lines will once again begin ringing off the hook with the advent of the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend, the busiest time of the year for a plumber according to the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors Association, and by far the most nightmarish.

Even ghosts and ghouls would blanch at the sights and smells unearthed by plumbers in the wake of Thanksgiving dinners across the country. John Wood, founder and CEO of Hub Plumbing & Mechanical in South Boston, MA readily attests to the more revolting aspects of the aftermath of many a Thanksgiving feast.

“Imagine the rich smells and colors of a typical Thanksgiving dinner; then imagine all of those foods mixed together, with a little drain cleaner and sink cleanser thrown in, and you’ll begin to get a whiff of the nightmare after Thanksgiving,” said Wood. “It’s unbelievable what people try to stuff down a 1 ½ inch diameter drain, or into an average garbage disposal. More than once we’ve literally had to cut out eight or nine foot sections of pipe that are literally packed to the gills with compacted waste.”

“Include large numbers of holiday guests adding water and waste to an overstressed septic system, on top of the food debris from the kitchen, and you really have the recipe for a potentially explosive plumbing disaster,” Wood noted. “There are many ways to avoid a colossal clog after Thanksgiving, but it seems that in the rush of preparing food and entertaining family and friends, every year people forget to use common sense and we get busier and busier…”

Clog Busters
If you’d rather not have a member of Hub Plumbing and Mechanical’s clog busting team as a holiday guest, Wood offers some simple dos and don’ts.

• Don’t pour grease down the drain – it congeals and solidifies inside of drainpipes. Do pour it into a tin can or old glass jar instead and toss it into the trash after it hardens.
• Don’t expect your garbage disposal to be a wood chipper – it wasn’t designed to chew up turkey skin and bones or dice up fibrous vegetable skins. Do dispose of these in the trash.
• Do run water down the drain while running the garbage disposal and keep it running for a few seconds after turning off the disposal to move the waste through the pipes.
• Don’t put more than a handful of food down the garbage disposal at one time. Think about it- what would happen if you crammed turkey, gravy, stuffing, mashed potatoes, yams, vegetables and three kinds of pie into your food processor. Would it still run?
• Don’t encourage guests to use the toilet as a dispose-all by leaving thick paper towels or napkins at hand in the bathroom. Do have large sized wastebaskets available, especially if there are a number of babies with disposable diapers in attendance.
