Ring-Pulls Christmas Tree for a Good Cause

Melaka, Malaysia, December 18, 2014 --(PR.com)-- At the start of Christmas season, staff at Philea Resort and Spa show concern for the environment and encouraged recycling by making a Christmas tree measuring at eight-feet tall, made from approximately 30,000 aluminium ring-pulls bedecked with sparkling ornaments.

The objective of making this green Christmas tree is to raise awareness on environmental issues and to encourage our staff and guest to practice 3Rs – reduce, reuse and recycle in creative ways. It took about a month to illustrate, sketch, weave and assemble the ring-pulls on the tree structure. More than 100 staff involved and contributed in this meaningful project. The tree is now being displayed at the lobby illuminated with colorful lighting.

In November, the resort also had an opportunity to work with 80 students from Pay Fong High School to experience an out-of-the-classroom educational field trip to learn about hotel management and green practices. The students were introduced on the resort operations, activities and architectures. They were also taught by our Marcom Executive, Mr Yow Han Fuh on handy environmentally-friendly craft using the ring-pulls while the resort is in the preparation for eco- Christmas tree project.

“The recycled aluminium ring-pulls which donated by the public, including the Pay Fong 2 Primary School, Pay Fong High School and some anonymous donors who brought the ring-pulls to us by the bucketful over four years. These ring-pulls weighed approximately 90kg and will be sent to local recycling center after Christmas to raise funds for the Wings Melaka. Wings Melaka is a non-profit organization providing a range of innovative learning opportunities to children with special needs and their families,” says Tee Mei Fong, the resort’s Assistant Marcom Manager.

“In year 2011, we made up an eco-Christmas tree from discarded drinking bottles collected from guest rooms and meeting rooms. Besides, we also utilized recycled items like newspapers, magazines and cardboards to build another eco-Christmas tree in year 2012. This year, we practiced the same again by creating the tree using discarded aluminium ring-pulls in our effort to increase awareness and disseminate information on good practices of reducing waste and recycling. I’m very proud of my team for this achievement,” mentioned Lim Beng Weh, the resort’s General Manager.

Apart from taking care of their guests, it has been Philea’s culture to constantly serve the community around us. The resort staff will also be volunteering to take part in the upcoming spring cleaning project at the centre of Wings Melaka on 5th January 2015 before the children return from school holidays on 8th January 2015. The objective of this initiative is to help the centre to save cost from outsourcing the yearly spring cleaning project to a third party agency. Added to that, this is also an effort to show care for the special needs children in their community to provide them a comfortable learning environment.

For the upcoming Christmas holiday, they are once again serving Christmas Eve dinner buffet featuring international gourmet delicacies priced at RM139++ per adult and RM83++ per child. Expect to feast in some scrumptious dishes such as Boneless Tube Roll Duck in Guacamole Cream Sauce, Bake Lamb Crown on Ratatouille and Bake Prawn with Cheese and Garlic.

Besides the freshly cooked food, another highlight of Christmas Eve Buffet is the live cooking stalls include Stir Fried Stall, Hot Plate Special, Christmas Carving, Charcoal Grill Selection, Italian and Western Specialty and more. For desserts, indulge in Christmas Pudding and Cookies, Christmas Log Cake, Macaroons and Warm Apple Strudel with Cinnamon Cream.
