Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Honored with 2014 Environment Minister’s Award

Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Insurance Inc. has been awarded the 2014 Environment Minister’s Award for Global Warming Prevention Activity (Implementation of Countermeasures) by the Japanese Ministry of the Environment in recognition of 18 years of climate change initiatives. This is the fourth consecutive year that Sompo Japan Nipponkoa has been a recipient of the award.

Tokyo, Japan, January 19, 2015 --(PR.com)-- Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Insurance Inc. has been awarded the 2014 Environment Minister’s Award for Global Warming Prevention Activity (Implementation of Countermeasures) by the Japanese Ministry of the Environment in recognition of 18 years of climate change initiatives. This is the fourth consecutive year that Sompo Japan Nipponkoa has been a recipient of the award.

1. The Environment Minister’s Award for Global Warming Prevention Activity
The Japanese Ministry of Environment confers the Environment Minister’s Award for Global Warming Prevention Activity to honor individuals or groups that have made significant contributions toward preventing global warming.

The award has been given annually since fiscal 1998 in the categories of Technological Development and Commercialization, Countermeasure Technology Introduction and Dissemination, Implementation of Countermeasures, Environmental Education/Dissemination and Enlightenment, International Contribution.

2. Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Environmental Activities
Sompo Japan Nipponkoa has been actively promoting initiatives to prevent climate change for 18 years, including becoming Japan’s first financial institution to receive ISO14001 certification in 1997 and acquiring blanket certification in November 2013 for its 400 offices nationwide, the largest of its kind for financial institutions in Japan.

Sompo Japan Nipponkoa has appointed approximately 2,100 employees to serve as environmental monitors in Japan and drive the company’s environmental activitiesby implementing systematic inspections, including checking that unused computers are turned off and paper usage is minimized. As a result of the company’s systematic efforts, CO2 emissions were down by 35.5% in fiscal 2013 from the fiscal 2002 base year.

In addition to its in-house CO2 emission reduction efforts, the company promotes global warming prevention through insurance products supporting the production of renewable energy with low CO2 emissions. In February 2014, Sompo Japan Nipponkoa launched the first fire insurance for wind power companies with a special clause to cover costs for accident recurrence prevention.
