Skillman, NJ, January 23, 2015 --(PR.com)-- Twice a week, Ben, along with his classmates, collect lunch orders from the staff and faculty of Rock Brook School, he places the orders at a local restaurant, goes with his teacher to pick up the food, and delivers lunch to the appropriate person.

Ben, who is 16-years old, is a student in Rock Brook School’s newly established high school program. Rock Brook, a hidden gem located in Skillman, NJ, has been educating children with special needs and their families for over 40 years. After four decades of serving children 5-14 years of age, the school expanded its services and now serves individuals up to 21-years old.

“We felt it was time to add a high school program to our wide array of services,” says Mary Caterson, Executive Director of Rock Brook School. “The fact is children grow up and most of their life is spent as an adult. Providing employment training to prepare students for life after graduation was a critical next step in our goal of helping each child reach his/her potential as a fulfilled and self-confident person. Our high school program is currently working with many local businesses. Students and staff enjoy their time in the community.”

Rock Brook’s high school program is following the Community-Based Instruction (CBI) method of teaching. CBI uses real-life settings to teach children functional daily living skills that they will need to become productive adults. CBI helps students develop age-appropriate skills for functioning outside the school environment and prepares students for successful transition into adulthood after graduation. CBI programs are hands-on and are implemented during trips to community locations.
