AS Students Participate in Holocaust Memorial Day

Oswestry, United Kingdom, February 01, 2015 --(PR.com)-- AS History students at the Oswestry Campus of Walford and North Shropshire College (WNSC), commemorated the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp as part of ‘Holocaust Memorial Day’ held on January 27th.

The Memorial Day is a national event, and provides an opportunity for everyone to think about the victims of the Holocaust, but also of more recent atrocities such as Cambodia and Rwanda; this year also marks the twentieth anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica, Bosnia.

History Course Leader, Jo Jones, commented, "this was an ideal opportunity for the students to reflect on why it is so vital to continue to study the Holocaust and to consider how history can help us to learn from the past. The students watched clips from ‘Schindler’s List’ and lit candles in an act of remembrance. Unfortunately, persecution is still a sad reality that blights communities in 2015 as the recent attacks in Paris demonstrate. Hopefully, the students left the lesson with a greater awareness of the need for tolerance."

Student Holly Rainford commented, "I hope that by remembering the victims, we and future generations can help raise awareness to prevent such horrific acts in the future."
