Edinburgh Irish Dancers Win Big Time and Will Represent the City, Region and Scotland at the World Championships in Montreal

Irish dancing in Edinburgh, Lothian’s & Fife has hit the big time. Edinburgh’s championship winning Irish dancing school Haughey McAuley Irish Dance Academy, won three major championship titles at the All Scotland Championships held in Glasgow 2015.

Two dancers from the same school and in the same age group appear in the top two positions at an international event recently.

Irish dancing in Edinburgh, Lothian’s & Fife has hit the big time. Edinburgh’s championship winning Irish dancing school Haughey - McAuley Irish Dance Academy, won three major championship titles at the recent All Scotland Championships held in Glasgow last weekend (5th – 8th February 2015).

11 dancers along with their family members will represent Edinburgh and Scotland at the 2015 World Championships in Montreal next month. The 8 day event will see 50 competitions being adjudicated by an esteemed panel of 21 judges which also see talented musicians play live for their performances. 2016 will see the World Championships being brought back to Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall for the 3rd time.

For the first time since the All Scotland Championships became an international event two pupils from the same school achieved the ultimate first and second places in the same championship, when Rachael Fraser (1st) and Jodi Millar (2nd )took home the Under 15 girls title & runner up. Joshua Russell Douglas won the Under 13 boys Preliminary title and the Under 19 Junior Girls Ceili team took their 3rd major title home after being crowned the All Scotland Champions for the 2nd year running. To complete the Worlds qualifying season eight other dancers also qualified for Montreal.

In addition the school were awarded top honours at the All Ireland Championships and Great British Championships both in solo’s and teams events and its dancers are getting ready for the biggest challenge of all The World Championships in Montreal next month.

Pupils travel from the Edinburgh and Lothian area and West Lothian to attend classes at their purpose built studio in Penicuik, Midlothian with classes also being held in Tranent and Peebles. The Academy in its existing form boasts 40 pupils and growing.

The School
Name of the dancing school Haughey McAuley Irish Dance Academy, has a purpose built studio in Penicuik, Midlothian with classes also being held in Tranent and Peebles and also in St Albans, England where Michelle’s sister resides and teaches.

There are five qualified teachers Michelle Haughey Edwards, Owen McAuley, Judith Clyne, Erin Conner & Laura Haughey. All dancers are from the Lothian Region, and the school are also the first winners of Edinburgh's Got Talent competition held at Edinburgh Assembly Halls in 2009.

The World Irish Dancing Championships (The Worlds)
The World Irish Dancing Championships are held annually in a different city across the world. Glasgow hosted two previous championships in 2002 and 2006.
In order to compete at the Worlds, dancers have to qualify at their regional qualifying.

Qualifying championships are held at both regional and national levels in 40 countries including: Scotland, Ireland, England, Wales, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria, Scandinavian countries, Japan, Russia, US , Canada, Australia, New Zealand and many others. The 2015 Championships will be held in Montreal, Canada between March 29 and April 5, 2015.

It is expected more than 5000 dancers from 68 different countries will compete in this year’ championships in Montreal.

Glasgow will once again host the 2016 Championships

A panel of 21 adjudicators will judge 50 competitions during the 8 days championships

The Dances
There are four styles of dance competitions across 8 age groups between under 10 to under 21 and over 21; Solo dances for boys and girls / Men and Ladies, plus team dances for traditional and new dances for groups of dancers of 8 and above.

All major, regional, national and international competitions are authorised by the Irish Dancing Commission based in Dublin, Ireland.
