SEXx: Interactive, Sex Positive Conference in Philadelphia May 7-9 2015

Philadelphia, PA, April 05, 2015 --(PR.com)-- In May 2015, Philadelphia will host a most unique and first-of-its-kind conference - SEXx Interactive: a Journey for the Mind, Heart and Body. A collective of individuals wanted to organize a conference different in flavor and content from what most individuals think of when they think “Sexuality Conference.” Led by GALAEI: a Queer Latin@ Social Justice Organization, SEXx Interactive: a Journey for the Mind, Heart and Body, will take place in Philadelphia May 7-10th, 2015 and follows the wildly successful SEXx event (patterned off of TEDx-style talks) founded by GALAEI and Dr. Timaree Schmit that was held last year and attracted over 150 participants. It has garnered attention from sex-positive people from across the United States, including: academics, clinicians, artists, activists and regular folks who are simply intrigued. SEXx Interactive includes more than 40 educational presentations, performances, “how-to” workshops, and sexually-themed art exhibitions between Thursday and Sunday.

Elicia Gonzales, Executive Director of GALAEI sees the conference as an important opportunity for looking at desire, sexuality and how those interact and are expressed in communities. “We hope through this conference to create safe spaces where frank discussions about sex, sexuality, and desire in its many diverse forms can inform, educate and empower individuals. As an organization rooted in HIV justice, we see open dialogue as a critical tool to sexual health and hope people will come away from the conference with a deeper understanding of the many dimensions and intersections that are an integral part of the human experience.” She goes on to say that “SEXx Interactive is very much in keeping with GALAEI’s tradition and founding framework as a sex-positive organization, as evidenced by our harm-reduction advocacy for the health and safety of sex workers through the Midnight Cowboy Project, (one of GALAEI’s first programs) and the SEXO Latex/SEXO campaigns that followed.”

Co-founder of last year's SEXx event, Dr. Schmit, is one of this year’s organizers, is conference Volunteer Coordinator, and will present on sexuality in horror films. Dr. Schmit states,“the diversity of the presentations in terms of content is amazing. Not only are the presenters from all backgrounds, but the program has something for everybody. We’ve got a workshop on enthusiastic consent in BDSM at the same time as a lecture on sexuality after cancer. There’s a historical examination of pubic hair trends, a practical lesson in “boylesque,” tips for dealing with jealousy, art exhibitions, dance parties, and even a comedy show.” Schmit referred to the event as “almost unprecedented. There are a few academic conferences around sexuality research, there are events where sexual freedom and social justice are discussed, and plenty of sexually-charged art performances out there. But SEXx Interactive brings it all together. It’s going to be a celebration.”

Featured keynote speakers include: Carlos Ulises Decena, Ph.D - Associate Professor at Rutgers University and interdisciplinary scholar, Feminista Jones - a self-proclaimed post-modern, sex-positive, Black feminist woman and author of the new book, Push the Button and Ignacio Rivera - a Two-Spirit, Black-Boricua Taíno, queer performance artist, activist, filmmaker, lecturer and sex educator.

SEXx Interactive will be held predominately at the First Unitarian Church, with some performance and nightlife components at nearby locations. For more information, on registration, schedule of events, or to volunteer please visit: www.sexxinteractive.com, visit and like us on Facebook.
