"...and other poems" by Toby Sisson at Yellow Peril

Series of mixed media paintings, drawings and prints inspired by a compilation of author and social critic James Baldwin’s lesser known verses.

Providence, RI, April 12, 2015 --(PR.com)-- Yellow Peril Gallery is pleased to present “…and other poems” by Toby Sisson from April 23 – May 31, 2015, featuring a series of mixed media paintings, drawings and prints inspired by a compilation of author and social critic James Baldwin’s lesser known verses. The opening reception is Saturday, April 23 from 6PM – 9PM.

“and other poems” reflects the latest evolution in Toby Sisson’s visual vocabulary, highlighting compositions from 2014 and 2015. Many of the most recent works are inspired by the poetry of James Baldwin from the new volume, "Jimmy's Blues and Other Poems”, a compilation of his lessor known verses. Sisson’s current body of work explores the breadth of metaphoric meaning that can be derived from non-objective abstraction, especially psychological and social content.

“Through mixed media compositions, I make paradoxical concepts tangible through formal elements, such as a repeated use of black as both presence and absence, simultaneously weighted and ephemeral,” notes Sisson. “I value the associative power of abstract images for their capacity to suggest complex ideas with basic colors and shapes.”

By working with a variety of substances — graphite, charcoal, beeswax, oil and ink on paper or wood — Sisson has discovered that asymmetrical relationships of materials, scale and tone have veiled yet potent connotations.

According to Baldwin, “The artistic image is not intended to represent the thing itself, but, rather, the reality of the force the thing contains.”

The opening reception for “…and other poems” is Saturday, April 25, from 6PM – 9PM. The exhibition will be on display until Sunday, May 31, 2015. This is Sisson’s first solo exhibition at Yellow Peril Gallery.

About Toby Sisson
