)-- Independent production company You Did It! Productions (“YDIP”) has secured rights to the poignant Shakespearean script "SHYLOCK," written by Chloe Traicos.
YDIP’s Devin Cutler, Lee Ettinger, and Stewart Hall will be producing, and Chloe Traicos will serve as Executive Producer.
SHYLOCK, in the tradition of “Shakespeare in Love,” portrays the circumstances under which Shakespeare penned one of his most famous masterpieces, The Merchant of Venice. Set in Tudor England, when anti-Semitism was not only rife, but was the law of the land, SHYLOCK follows Shakespeare’s efforts to bring the suffering of England’s Jews to light by memorializing his friendship with a Jewish merchant-in-hiding in the form of a play. However, events, threaten to deluge Shakespeare, his friend, and even his play, under a tide of anti-Semitism, and the Bard must use all of his wiles to stay true to his principals.
“Chloe Traicos has penned a wonderful script,” says Devin Cutler. “Not only is SHYLOCK a clever, amusing, and literate tale of Shakespeare and the characters upon which he would base The Merchant of Venice, but the script also serves a more important point - to shine a light on anti-Semitism, which was not only a problem then, but is certainly a growing problem in today’s world and one that we feel needs to continue to be addressed in film.”
