)-- Award winning composer John Debney’s Passion Symphony will have its Czech premiere at the 57th Smetana’s Litomysl Festival. The concert’s prologue, seven Stations of the Cross, and the epilogue based on Italian, Latin, & Hebrew texts from Mel Gibson’s film’s soundtrack will be performed by a vocal symphony comprised of soprano Alžběta Poláčková, mezzosoprano Lisbeth Scott, tenor Aleš Briscein and accompanied by renowned flautist, Pedro Eustache. They will sing alongside the Czech Philharmonic Choir Brno with the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Debney himself. The concert will take place at Litomysl’s 2nd Castle Courtyard on Sunday, June 21st at 9PM.
Inspired by his Oscar® nominated score for Passion of the Christ, Debney’s symphony will be played in the 900 seat venue courtyard within Litomysl Castle’s amphitheatre. Smetana’s Litomysl’s festival has become a high quality cultural event, hosting unique projects for the staging of music both domestically and internationally. This year’s program includes music from a variety of projects including Macbeth, The Little Prince, The Phantom of the Opera and many more.
Smetana’s Litomysl Festival was named after one of the greatest composers of the 19th century and creator of modern Czech classical music, Bedrich Smetana. A native to Litomysyl, Smetana is celebrated every summer with the festival. In 1949, the festival’s program consisted mainly of Smetana’s pieces and eventually invited operatic ensembles and other world composers. The festival has continued to attract attention around the world and its importance has extended beyond the borders of Litomysl to Czech’s cultural life as a whole.
