NSC Independent Living Skills Hold Bird Box Build-Off Competition

Oswestry, United Kingdom, June 26, 2015 --(PR.com)-- The Work and Independent Living Skills Department at North Shropshire College’s Walford Campus recently held a Bird Box Build-Off Competition; the competition involves building a bird box to a required standard using pre-cut pieces of timber and a range of hand tools. The first competition took place between two students from NSC and two students from the Derwen College, the winner was Jonathan Duncalf from the Derwen College.

Matt Lewis, Work and Independent Living Skills Coordinator, commented "This is the first year North Shropshire College has held a Foundation Learning competition and it was evident from the quality of work produced, that learners enjoyed competing in the 'Bird Box - Build Off'. Staff from within NSC’s Work and Independent Living Skills Department were extremely pleased with the amount of interest generated and look forward to hosting a range of similar competitions next year. Overall, learners from within the department have competed in over seven events at three different colleges and achieved three Silver and four Bronze awards."

Bob Jones, a former Walford College student and retired carpenter who worked in Work and Independent Living Skills, judged the contest, he commented, "I feel that the standard of work was really good considering that they all had to share the tools available, the winners effort was that little bit more refined and was well worth 28 points, a great effort by all competitors."
