Linbeck Group Completes KIPP Unity Primary School, Begins KIPP Academy West Middle School at Former Manufacturing Facility Site

Houston, TX, September 29, 2015 --(PR.com)-- Linbeck Group, a Texas-based, technology-driven building construction firm, announces its completion of KIPP Unity Primary School, part of a two-school campus in southwest Houston at the site of the former Sunbelt Spas manufacturing and retail facility. The 10.5-acre KIPP West Campus, located at 8500 Highway 6 South near Beechnut, required extensive site remediation and demolition work for the two-phase project. The site opened with a founding class of Mission Bend and Alief kindergarteners and 5th graders in August and will grow by a grade each year until serving students in grades pre-K3 through eighth grade. Construction on the 36,000-square-foot KIPP Academy West Middle School building, the eleventh middle school in the KIPP Houston Public Schools network, is expected to begin early October in preparation for the 2016-17 school year.

Re-purposed from an existing 67,000 square foot warehouse manufacturing building, KIPP Unity Primary School features 41 classrooms each with 4’ by 10’ skylights and clerestory windows providing natural light, a cafeteria / indoor recreation area, a computer resource and learning center, refurbishment of an existing 4,000 square foot outdoor covered area into a new play space, and a new 10,000 open-air athletic pavilion located between the primary and middle schools. Site upgrades include the addition of grass playfields, new sidewalks, a bus drive, parking lots and security system. Construction cost for the primary school renovation totaled $6.8 million or $101 per square foot. The total project cost for both schools is $17.1 million.

With this campus, Linbeck Group has built more than 2.2 million square feet of charter schools including 60 KIPP projects.

KIPP, the Knowledge Is Power Program, is a national network of free, open-enrollment, college-preparatory public schools founded in Houston in 1994. KIPP has grown to 183 public schools in 20 states and DC serving nearly 70,000 children. Houston is KIPP’s largest region, with 24 public schools serving more than 12,500 students and an additional 4,000 alumni in college and beyond.
