10-Piece Nu Shooz Orchestra Unveils New Material in Two Performances at the Legendary Jimmy Mak’s Jazz Club

Portland, OR, December 11, 2007 --(PR.com)-- The Nu Shooz Orchestra announced today that it will appear for a two-show performance at Jimmy Mak’s in Portland on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008. The first set, open to all ages, will run from 8:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.; the second, open to 21+, will run from 10:30 p.m. – midnight. These intimate club appearances will provide a sneak preview of material from the band’s upcoming album, “Pandora’s Box,” prior to its release in 2008. Tickets for each show are $12. Advance dinner reservations are recommended; tickets will be available at the door. For reservations or more information, call Jimmy Mak’s at 503-295-6542.

Two decades after Nu Shooz won over dance floors worldwide, earning a “Best New Artist” Grammy nomination and reaching #3 on the Billboard Top 200, the Portland-based pop sensation has regrouped with a sophisticated new “James Brown meets James Bond” sound that combines their signature brand of funk with elements borrowed from film noir and ‘60’s spy movies.

Nu Shooz Orchestra is the brainchild of singer Valerie Day and composer/arranger John Smith. Day is a familiar face in Portland’s jazz scene, while Smith has spent the last few years scoring independent films and hundreds of commercials.

Nu Shooz Orchestra is a 10-member group with horns, strings, vibes, percussion and stand-up bass, all complemented by Day’s shimmering vocals. Their live shows create a unique sonic world. The band’s acoustic instrumentation is warm and welcoming, while the music remains as funky, smart and cool as ever.

Nu Shooz earned a Gold Record for the album “Poolside” in 1987. Their breakthrough hit, “I Can’t Wait,” continues to be played on radio stations around the globe every 12 minutes. The band has been featured on MTV, VH1 and seminal music programs like American Bandstand, Solid Gold and the UK’s Top of the Pops. They’ve toured with some of the biggest names in show business, including Tina Turner, Billy Ocean and the Pointer Sisters.

The Nu Shooz Orchestra most recently appeared at the Bite of Oregon, the Vancouver Parks Concert Series and KINK FM’s Holiday Benefit Concert. The group now invites fans to join them for their first club performance at the legendary Jimmy Mak’s.
