Linbeck Transforms Former Furniture Store Showroom Into $7 Million YES Prep Charter School

Houston, TX, October 31, 2015 --(PR.com)-- Linbeck Group, a Texas-based, technology-driven building construction firm, announces its completion of YES Prep Southside and phase three of YES Prep Gulfton. The total cost for both school projects is $12.3 million.

The 10-acre YES Prep Southside, located at 5515 South Loop East, occupies the former Levitz Furniture Store’s 162,000-square-foot showroom and warehouse. The site required adaptive reuse for a three-phase project, which included the school, a Home Office and empty space reserved for future expansion. The first phase included the completion of the 83,406 square foot school serving 1,100 students grades 6 – 12. The facility boasts 35 classrooms, labs for music, science and art, a library, cafeteria with seating for 600 students, and a gymnasium. The expansive site provided ample space to also develop a home office for the YES Prep Public School System with conference space, training classrooms and an auditorium for presentations. Its freeway visibility is a first for YES Prep. Construction cost for the project totaled $7 million or $84 per square foot.

Established in 2007 and serving a growing student body, the phase three build out of YES Prep Gulfton (6565 De Moss) serving grades 6-12 included the addition of classrooms, offices and a cafeteria, adding a total of 17,000 square feet to the school. Steel exterior stairs were also added to comply with the city of Houston’s egress requirements. Construction began in June 2015 and was completed in two months.

With the completion of these campuses, Linbeck Group has built more than 2.2 million square feet of charter schools.

“Transforming the long-vacant Levitz site into a modern, educational facility that re-energizes the community and provides a welcoming learning environment is cause for celebration,” said David Stueckler, president and CEO of Linbeck Group, “This marks the twelfth YES Prep School for Linbeck Group, and we look forward to continued involvement as they reimagine urban public education.”

YES Prep comprises 15 schools and serves 10,000 junior high and high school students in disadvantaged communities throughout the Houston area. The program provides students with support from teachers, a rigorous academic curriculum and assessment, enrichment opportunities, and college counseling and support throughout the college career. Since its founding in 1998, YES Prep has seen 72 percent of its alumni either graduate from college or remain enrolled in a postsecondary institution, which compares favorably to the 8 percent of low-income students enrolled in or graduated from postsecondary programs nationally.

“YES schools are the cornerstone of the neighborhoods they support and demand for high-quality education for Houston’s most disadvantaged children isn’t waning,” says Mark DiBella, superintendent of YES Prep. “Our partnership with Linbeck is paramount to our five-year campaign of increasing enrollment capacity and opening new facilities that enhance the student experience."
