Andrew Baldwin – Veteran, Physician, Reality Star – to Speak at Oakland University

Dr. Baldwin will share his message of "Service Above Self" at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 9, in OU's Varner Recital Hall.

Rochester, MI, November 07, 2015 --( From reality television to military service to family medicine, Dr. Andrew Baldwin has made a mark in many fields. While he may be best known for starring in season 10 of the reality TV series “The Bachelor,” Dr. Baldwin is also a U.S. Navy Officer, ironman triathlete, humanitarian and board-certified family physician.

He will bring his message of “Service Above Self” to Oakland University’s campus at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 9, in Varner Recital Hall. The lecture is co-sponsored by OU’s Student Life Lecture Board and Student Veterans of OU.

Dr. Baldwin currently serves as Family Medicine Staff and Faculty at Fort Belvoir Community Hospital in the Washington, D.C. area. He also worked for the Navy’s Bureau of Medicine and Surgery in Washington, D.C., where he assisted the U.S. Surgeon General with Healthy-Youth-for-a-Healthy-Future. He is founder of the Got Your Back Network, a nonprofit organization supporting families of fallen service members.

Dr. Baldwin’s appearance is also being held as part of OU’s observance of Veterans Day, which is Wednesday, Nov. 11.

“OU has been working hard to become the most veteran-friendly campus in Michigan,” said Jason Hale, president of Student Veterans of OU. “Hosting events like this in honor of Veterans Day is just one way we show support to not only the more than 300 student veterans we have on campus, but to veterans in our community as well. Dr. Baldwin’s message of ‘Service Above Self’ is a fitting tribute to our veterans and a call to action that everyone can take to heart.”

Dr. Baldwin earned a Bachelor of Science from Duke University, an M.D. from the University of California San Francisco, and a Masters in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University. During his visit, Dr. Baldwin will also tour the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine and meet with medical students.

He said he looks forward to sharing his encouraging message with the OU community.

“Putting service above self is something I was taught early on, and it’s what I’ve tried to do my whole life – in the Navy, as a physician, and through service work around the world,” Dr. Baldwin said. “That’s what’s most fulfilling…when you surround yourself with service-minded people, you develop a family that you can count on for life.”

The Student Life Lecture Series at OU is held to educate, inform, motivate and entertain OU students and the community – has welcomed past speakers such as Dr. Jane Goodall, Maya Angelou, President Jimmy Carter, James Earl Jones, Kurt Vonnegut, Oprah Winfrey and many more. The first lecture series was held in 1979.

The event is free and open to the public. No tickets are required. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. For more information, contact the Center for Student Activities and Leadership Development at (248) 370-2400.
