"Parachute Games: The Art of Holiday Survival" at Yellow Peril

Playful exhibition about surviving the art world and the holiday season, curated by Brooke Erin Goldstein with special programming presented by Kiosk PVD.

Providence, RI, November 12, 2015 --(PR.com)-- Yellow Peril Gallery is pleased to announce "Parachute Games: The Art of Holiday Survival," a playful exhibition about surviving the art world and the holiday season, curated by Brooke Erin Goldstein with special programming presented by Kiosk PVD, from November 21 – December 26, 2015. Yellow Peril Gallery will host an Opening Reception for Parachute Games on Saturday, November 21, from 6PM – 9PM.

"Parachute Games" is a satirical response to the seemingly impossible goal of “making it” in art mixed with the notion of “making it through” the holiday season. “It takes a resourceful wit and strategic thinking to survive modern life, especially when you are in the business of creative expression,” notes Goldstein. “The need to think outside the box and bring a level of amusement to enduring life is amplified during the holidays. Sustaining oneself through this time of year can seem like a particularly cruel sport we are forced to play for the benefit of others. Often what we really need in life, art, and throughout the holidays,” she stresses, “is the ability to slow it down so we can position ourselves for a tactical landing.”

Featured artists in "Parachute Games" will investigate what creative survival means in their studio practice and how to survive as an art collector during the holiday season with smartly priced works. In the main exhibition space, Kirstin Lamb, Melissa Meyer, Scott Moran and Kevin Veronneau will present both challenging and entertaining presentations of paintings, mixed media, works on paper and sculpture that invite viewers to consider their conflicted sentiments during the holiday season. In the adjacent gallery, Michael Bykovski, Margie Butler, Kara Dune, Fredric Gorman, Brett Henrikson, Mary Kudlak, Cynthia Lech and Mara Trachtenberg will offer smartly priced works of art under $100 in a variety of mediums, including ceramics, photographs, sculptures, prints, and paintings.

“'Parachute Games' pokes fun at the very serious difficulties we face surviving modern life emotionally, financially and literally,” notes Goldstein. “The exhibition will help us to gain perspective on what’s really important, especially this time of year.”

Throughout the run of the exhibition, Kiosk PVD will present special programming to support the creative community in Providence. The Board Room will host Survival Themed Board Game Night at the gallery with several collaborative game stations on December 1, from 7PM – 9PM. Artist Scott Moran will host Mining for Gold, a Gilded Trash Art Hunt on Friday, December 11, from 6:30PM - 7:30PM. Visitors are invited to bring flashlights and meet at the gallery for winter beverages before embarking on an outdoor art discovery walk through The Plant complex and sections of Olneyville – “litter-aly” finding gold “art-ifacts” meant to challenge our perspective on what is art and where we go to find it. To celebrate the holiday season season, Kiosk PVD will host a Creative Networking Holiday Party for the creative community and supporters of the arts looking to meet creative professionals active in the Creative Capital on Thursday, December 17, from 7PM – 9PM.
