NSC A Level Students Take Part in Physics Masterclass

Oswestry, United Kingdom, December 03, 2015 --(PR.com)-- North Shropshire College’s (NSC) Physics Lecturer, Rupert Boyle, took his A Level students to the University of Birmingham for a Particle Physics Masterclass recently. The students analysed the data from the ATLAS detector of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, the world’s largest and most powerful particle accelerator based on the Swiss-French Border. The students used software from CERN, learning about identifying particles generated from high-energy proton–proton collisions by their tracks through the detector.

All of the students managed to identify the particles in their sample data, and student Hannah Burn correctly identified the Higgs Boson (also known as the ‘God Particle’), the force carrier that gives objects mass which earned Peter Higgs the Nobel Prize for Physics in 2013. Hannah is one of the top physics students at NSC, and she is planning on progressing to study Physics at Cambridge University.

Hannah commented, "I really enjoyed the particle Physics Masterclass at the University of Birmingham. It was very informative and I enjoyed the activity that accompanied it, especially as I was lucky enough to discover the Higgs Boson. The opportunities that are offered to me by North Shropshire College are invaluable, and I am thoroughly enjoying my time there."
