SGS Informs on EU Updates Affecting Energy Labeling Requirements for Refrigerated Storage Equipment

Both energy labeling and ecodesign requirements for refrigeration equipment have been expanded under new EU regulations 2015/1094 and 2015/1095.

On 8 July 2015, the European Union announced Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) No. 2015/1094, supplementing Directive 2010/30/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council, with regard to energy labeling of professional refrigerated storage cabinets, and Commission Regulation (EU) No. 2015/1095, implementing Directive 2009/125/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council, with regard to ecodesign requirements for professional refrigerated storage cabinets, blast cabinets, condensing units and process chillers.

Energy Labeling and Energy Requirements

Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) No. 2015/1094, supplementing Directive 2010/30/EU, establishes requirements for the energy labeling of, and the provision of supplementary product information on, electric mains-operated professional refrigerated storage cabinets, including those sold for the refrigeration of foodstuffs and animal feed. It also specifies the responsibilities of suppliers and dealers, as well as the measurement and calculation methods used to define energy efficiency classes, annual energy consumption and volumes.

Ecodesign Regulations

Commission Regulation (EU) No. 2015/1095 implementing Directive 2009/125/EC establishes ecodesign requirements for professional refrigerated storage cabinets, blast cabinets, condensing units and process chillers. In addition, it specifies ecodesign requirements and the timetable, the conformity assessment, the verification procedure for market surveillance purposes, indicative benchmarks and transitional provisions.

Compliance Schedule

- Commission Regulation (EU) No. 2015 /1094 of 5 May 2015 entered into force on the twentieth day following that of its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union (8 July 2015).
- Commission Regulation (EU) No. 2015 /1095 of 5 May 2015 entered into force on the twentieth day following that of its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union (8 July 2015).

Changes Apply to Professional Refrigeration Storage Equipment

This regulation affects electric mains-operated professional refrigerated storage cabinets, including those sold for the refrigeration of foodstuffs and animal feed, as well as blast cabinets, condensing units and process chillers. In addition, products must comply with this regulation before it enters into force.
