SF International Arts Festival 2016 Announces Detailed Program Multiple Artists from 13 Countries and the Bay Area to Feature in Over 100 Performances and Exhibitions
SF International Arts Festival is pleased to announce the program for 2016, which will take place from May to June 5 as a co-presentation with the Fort Mason Center for Arts and Culture. More than 50 performance ensembles will participate in the Festival including some of the Bay Area’s finest as well as companies travelling from as far afield as Canada, Colombia, England, France, Japan, Lithuania, Morocco, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Serbia, South Korea, Switzerland and Taiwan.

Director, Andrew Wood said, “We are happy to unveil the 2016 San Francisco International Arts Festival and are positively ecstatic to be continuing to build on our relationship with the Fort Mason Center. Working together we have been able to create what we think has become the largest annual international gathering of performance artists in the western United States. It’s going to be an exciting program and lot of fun.”
SFIAF 2016 will be headlined by Hiroshi Koike’s Bridge Project from Japan with “Restaurant of Many Orders.” The headline theatre company is Pan Pan Theatre from the Republic of Ireland with the award winning theatrical production “The Seagull and Other Birds.” Pan Pan’s is a roller coaster re-imagining of Chekhov’s masterpiece.
International music offerings are led by Cimarrón led by harpist Carlos Rojas. From Serbia the Festival welcomes Trio Balkan Strings, a family ensemble led by Zoran Starcevic that is virtuosic and unconventional, spontaneous and brimming with energy.
From London, England the Festival will feature the US debut of the ground breaking company Touretteshero and their unique performance piece “Backstage in Biscuit Land.”
From Northern Ireland, the heralded San Francisco return of solo performer Kate Perry in “The Very Perry Show.” Other international artists performing at the Festival include: storyteller Hassan El Jai from Morocco with “The Forty Rules of Love” choreographers Lora Juodkaite from Lithuania with “Atmintis” (Memory), Sara Porter from Canada with “Sara Does A Solo,” Shang-Chi Sun from Taiwan with “Traverse,” T42 Dance a Euro – Japanese collaboration based in Switzerland with “Another Chopstick Story” and a new work to be created by Surya Berthomieux from France in collaboration with San Francisco composer Sascha Jacobson and Musical Art Quintet.

Freedom Now Suite,” Avotjca and Modupue perform an evening of music, Bandelion present “Band of Lions III”, CALI & CO in collaboration with OngDance Company and Matt EL will perform HERE, the Caravan Band present music and dance of the Middle East, Charlie Levin performs “Single Point Perspective,” Chus Alonso and Potaje with Fandangueros, Cascada de Flores and Charmaine Clamor present “Fandango-Pandanggo,” Dana Lawton Dance Company present “Silence Of…” and “Wax and Wire,” David Kleinberg performs “Hey, Hey, LBJ!,” David Molina and Idris Ackamoor present “Duets in the Key of DADA,” Del Sol String Quartet perform the works of Mohammed Fairouz and Chinary Ung, Eliana Lopez performs “What’s the Scandal,” Brenda Wong Aoki and Mark Izu present “Uncle Gunjiro's Girlfriend,” Genny Lim and Marshall Trammell perform “Black Geomancy and Tantric (G)hosts: The Sound of Temple Kailasa,” Hatch Performance Collective perform the site-specific “Firehouse/Waterfront,” Impuritan perform with with Anna Geyer, Loachfillet, Flower Patterna and Edna Mira Raia, Inferno Theatre present “Quantum Desire,” Jon Jang Quintet with Amanda Kemp present “Can't Stop Cryin' for America: Black Lives Matter!,” Kinetech Arts perform “Elements of Others,” Musette perform The Nightingale by Deborah Henson-Conant, composer and instrument builder Peter Whitehead and Friends will present a “Mini-Music Marathon,” STEAMROLLER Dance Company presents “Legendary Children,” Theatre Movement International present “Homecoming,” ViBO Simfani play Latin and Brazilian styles, Wooden Fish Ensemble perform the work of Hyo-Shin Na and Yaelisa & Caminos Flamencos perform at the Cowell Theater.
The Borromeo String Quartet from Boston will perform Hi Kyung Kim’s “Percussion Quintet” with guest artist William Winant.
The Festival will also feature the return of the runaway hit show of SFIAF 2012, “White Rabbit, Red Rabbit” by Nassim Souleimanpour from Iran. Twelve local luminaries will be in the hot-seat in 2016 including: Rotimi Agbabiaka of the San Francisco Mime Troupe, Russell Blackwood of Thrill Peddlers, stage director Tony Kelly, Eric Reid of Thrill Peddlers, comedian Nato Green, Eliana Lopez (in Spanish), Shinichi Iova-Koga of inkBoat, Rob Melrose of Cutting Ball Theater, Ava Roy of the We Players and Nancy Wang of Eth Noh Tec.
The Festival’s 2016 visual arts exhibit is titled: “Dada Here and Now” honoring the centennial of the birth of Dada. The exhibit will feature work by Paul Cartier, Antonio Cortez, Tom Dunn, Danielle Freakley, Anna Geyer, Katya Grokhovsky, John Held, Carl Heyward + Global Art Project [GAP]: Mario Catalona, John Crabtree, Vered Gersztenkorn, Violet Skipp Haffner, Jenny Hynes, Annie Lindberg, Massimo Nota, Laura Oh, Glen Rogers Alvaro Sanchez, Ron Shelton, Akiko Suzuki, Ron Weijers, Heather Wilcoxon, Masani Landfair Wisewaters, Janet Jones, Jonathon Keats, Naomie Kremer, Kadet Kuhne , Gil Kuno, Jon Kuzmich, Mary Corey March, Douglas McCulloh, Patrick Rees, Michael Vale and Rachel Znerold.
