Kubtec: Improving Precision and Breast Cancer Outcomes with RSL

Milford, CT, February 12, 2016 --(PR.com)-- For women, testing positive for breast cancer arouses a host of uncertainties: loss of a breast, disfigurement and worse. Oftentimes, the rush to remove all cancer takes precedence over breast conservation, both for patients and surgeons, in an effort to ensure all cancer cells are excised.

Although well-intentioned, this approach does not take into account new technological developments, such as radioactive seed location (RSL) and 3D specimen imaging, which facilitate the most sensitive and exact method for detecting and excising breast tumors.

A minimally invasive procedure primarily applied to smaller tumors in the breast, detected by mammograms or breast ultrasound but rarely by touch, radioactive seed location is beginning to supplant traditional wire localization for lumpectomies. RSL involves implanting the breast with a small radioactive seed, often days before the surgical procedure, which enables the surgeon to locate and remove early-stage breast cancer with greater precision, and less discomfort for patients.

A recent study published by National Center for Biotechnology Information found that after performing the procedure on “1200 patients RSL was shown to facilitate breast- and axilla-conserving surgery (BCS) in a diverse patient population. There was a significant reduction in resection volume while maintaining low positive resection margin rates after BCS.”

A Cedars-Sinai study also confirmed that “RSL combines advanced imaging with precise tumor localization to remove breast tumors with as little disturbance to surrounding healthy breast tissue as possible.” This coupled with 3D specimen imaging, which provides the most comprehensive margin analysis available, has substantially improved the quality of care for patients undergoing breast cancer surgery.

Kubtec®, the world leader in advanced women’s health technology offers the Gamma Pro® Node and Seed Location System, to pinpoint seed locations in breast tissue of patients of all body types instantly during surgery. Used in conjunction in the operating room with the Mozart® System with TomoSpec® Technology, the only patented 3D imaging system for specimen radiography, the Gamma-Pro™ System is part of the ongoing commitment of Kubtec® to improve both oncological outcomes and breast conservation for women with breast cancer.
